Camera-Critters #73

When I go walking
down the road,
through the field,
or even just
through my yard,
all of a sudden, I'll hear this
indescribable noise.
It's almost deafening.

It's hard to believe that something
this size could create a noise
so huge.

(c) Misty DawnS

It's a Cicada.
They are large compared to other bugs,
and their sound is like no other.

Can you believe September is here? Pretty soon before you know it, it will be Christmas!!!

Happy Anniversary BBFF

(c) Misty DawnS
I've been unbelievably busy and stressed out lately and haven't had enough time to get anything done, let alone blog. :-(
However, I couldn't let today pass by without my making a post. Two years ago today, I sent an e-mail to this "blogging chic", because I had a couple questions. I didn't even know if she would respond, or if she would simply ignore my e-mail. Guess what - she responded, answered my questions, and something happened... a wonderful and amazing friendship began and has continued to grow ever since that day!
HAPPY
"MET YA"
ANNIVERSARY
TO MY
BBFF,
TAM!!!

Camera-Critters #72

* * Warning - If you have a fear of bats, then you will want to skip this Camera-Critters post * *

These little critters are hanging out at the university where I work.
We have a helipad in between buildings, and these guys are hanging in the corners of the building. Don't be afraid; they don't bother anyone.

They just hang out. That's all.

(c) Misty DawnS

There are three in one corner and two in another corner. I got upset because I saw some of the maintenance guys spraying out there, but it turns out they were just spraying a bee's nest.

(c) Misty DawnS

I think the species is Little Brown Bat.
They are quite little - about the size of a mouse.
You'll think I'm crazy, but I think they're cute.
It's OK, I've accepted that y'all think I'm batty.... errrr crazy. hehe

Camera-Critters #71

I have been absent from the blogging world... well actually the entire internet, for awhile, because I got a virus on my laptop. Considering two of my jobs rely on this computer, and all of my photos are on this computer, I was in quite the panic and spent all my time trying to get rid of the virus. I think I'm safe now... but then again, let me tell you about another danger. Please continue reading - it's for your own good.

You may think
you are safe.
You may think
your neighborhood is quiet.
But do you know
what comes out at night?
(c) Misty DawnS

Do you know of
the Bright-Eyed Bunnies?
Oh yes, tis a rare species
which comes out at night.
They stare at you with
those bright eyes
(c) Misty DawnS

And, if the bright eyes
don't hypnotize you,
they will hop about
and perform ceremonial dances
in an attempt to make you dizzy with fear.
(c) Misty DawnS

Oh yes, by daylight
they look cute and innocent enough
but do NOT be fooled, because
when you lease expect it.
This...
(c) Misty DawnS

will turn into this...
(c) Misty DawnS

And don't even get my started on
the #57 species.
Turn your back on one of these,
and it will take over the world...
one cow-pile at a time.
(c) Misty DawnS

Be thankful I warned you.
You will be more prepared
if you are well informed.

Well, now that you've
locked your doors
and got some affordable health insurance quotes,
Let me tell ya how to
join some memes...

Don't forget Heads or Tails on Tuesday, Looking at the Sky on Friday, and for your weekend enjoyment...

Heads or Tails *Notes on Farming*

Heads Or Tails

If you click on the graphic above, it will take you to the awesome HoT blog where you can sign up and start participating in this fun and popular meme!

This week's theme is HEADS - Note

So, I thought I'd share with you a few notes on FARMING.

1. Barbed wire hurts!
2. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side,
especially when there's barbed wire in between you and
the other side.

(c) Misty DawnS

3. For some, farming has been a way of life for many decades.

(c) Misty DawnS

(Photographer's note the above photo was changed to sepia
just in case you didn't notice.)

(c) Misty DawnS

4. Nowadays, you have to have a fairly large operation
in order to make a living with farming.
5. This photo proves that we ALL can
get along and live together harmoniously.
6. When walking around a farm,
You may want to watch where you step - just sayin'. (c) Misty DawnS

(As I said - a LARGE operation)
Oh, and a note for any of you who are wondering
NO - these photos are NOT of our farm.
They are of a large, and very nice, farming operation I photographed
while out on a photo-drive a couple weekends ago.(c) Misty DawnS

That's all for now. Thank you for your time and attention
Until next time - have a great day. ;-)

Camera-Critters #70

I couldn't decide whether I wanted to put the funny photos and corny captions to consider on this blog or if I wanted to put the pretty photos on this blog...

It was a tough decision, but finally I made a decision. If you want to see the funny photos and corny captions, you'll have to check out my Camera-Critters post on my other blog.

If you visited my Looking at the Sky on Friday post on Misty's Words, you know that last weekend we went to visit with my in-laws for a little while on Sunday. As we were leaving, we were standing on the patio talking when I spotted this little, green Ruby Throated Hummingbird sitting on the barbed wire. Since I've been wanting to get a hummingbird photo for so long, I just had to see what I could accomplish.

(c) Misty DawnS

The hummingbird was being quite cooperative until this Wren decided it was jealous and that it should be the focus of my portraits. Of course I obliged it... I'm not one to pass up a good photo, even if it is of a little camera-hog. ;-)

Looking at the Sky on Friday

WooHooo! It's Friday! Not only is it the end of the work week for most people, it's also time for the fun and wonderful meme where we spend our time Looking at the Sky on Friday! (Click on the badge to join in the fun!)

(c) Misty DawnS

This photo would almost work for both the Looking at the Sky Meme AND the Camera-Critters Meme, don't ya think? hehe We've got the sky and scenery beyond the gate, which is great for Looking at the Sky, and we've got all sorts of critters ON the gate, which would be great for Camera-Critters. If you can't make it out, there's a bull, a line of Blackbirds, a calf, and a cow. Also, there are deer antlers all along the top of the walls going out from the gate. I couldn't get the full scene in the photo though, because I didn't have my wide-angle lens on my camera. I was in the ditch and backed up against a barbed wire fence, but this was still all I could get in the frame. ;-)

Is That Really Me?

(c) Misty DawnS
After telling you about my hairdresser's antics yesterday, some of you said you wanted to see me with my hair straightened (and highlighted). Well, although it is NOT a good photo of me, and the hair honestly looked WAY better in person than it does in this photo, I'm answering your requests. Please ignore the red eyes, as it had been a long day at work, and I was just stopping long enough for a photo before I got papers off the fax machine to type for my second job.
Anyway, that is me with my hair straightened. I kept it straight today too, although the curl is starting to creep back... that curl is a tough fighter. Tomorrow, I'll be back to full curliness. ;-)

Looking the Part

I've decided that I am going to step up my act... or, I guess I should say step up my 'look'. Last week, I got my hair cut, and today I went and got highlights for the first time ever. While I was there, my hairdresser thought it would be lots of fun to straighten my hair, which is naturally quite curly. She wanted to surprise the girls I work with (she cuts their hair too), and she definitely succeeded.

Anyway, I also have started putting together a more professional, and better-fitting wardrobe for work. I work in a professional environment, and I need to start looking the part. I do most of my shopping online, because we don't have many stores around here. One of the online places where I have looked for clothing is Zappos.

On Zappos website, you can find clothing for every family member. You can find every style of clothing, whether casual or formal. And to create the complete package, you can find clothes for all shapes and sizes. So, if you're needing to shop online, you may want to check out their website.

Blazing Stars & Rattlesnakes

(c) Misty DawnS

Thanks to a very knowledgeable Flickr friend, I now know what these interesting flowers are. The tall purple flower is commonly called Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris Pycnostachya), and the nectar-rich flowers are popular with the butterflies... which is the exact reason we'll be transplanting some to my flower garden with my Butterfly bush ;-)

If you look closely, you can see another interesting plant/flower. It has round greenish-white flowers which have little spikes and resemble a thistle. That plant is commonly known as Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium Yuccifolium). Here's the part that I think is so neat. It got its common name of Rattlesnake Master, because it was once used to treat Rattlesnake bites! Isn't that neat??? OK, yes I'm easily amused.

Camera-Critters #69

A week ago yesterday, I got a phone call from my mother-in-law that my husband's great-aunt was being life-flighted to the hospital for emergency surgery... and the doctors were doubtful she would make it through the surgery. My heart sank, as this woman is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met in my life. Each time we'd leave after visiting with her, I would be filled with inspiration to follow my dreams.

Saturday morning, our phone rang. Hubs answered it because I was still in bed. When he came in the bedroom, I just knew, but I still asked who had called. He told me that his great-aunt had passed away. This explains why my CC posts were late last week. Everything else, such as blog posts or diet pill reviews, didn't seem important at all anymore - I got up, got dressed, grabbed the camera, and went for a walk (aren't you glad I got dressed first?).

I didn't get many feet from my home when I discovered this butterfly sitting in the road in front of me. I had never seen this kind of butterfly before, so I started taking photo after photo of it. But, it posed for me for so long that I actually became concerned that it was injured. So, I bent down and stuck my finger out. The butterfly crawled up on my finger and sat there awhile. Then, it flew off, as I stood there and watched. But... it turned in mid-air and circled back towards me. It then proceeded to land, on the road, right in front of me again, and spread its wings wide so I could view its beautiful colors. It was at that point that I was overcome with the feeling that my husband's great-aunt, a woman who meant a great deal to me, was letting me know that she was doing fine now.

So, I introduce to you the Red Spotted Purple Butterfly. I hope you enjoy it as much as I.
