Heads or Tails *Photograph*

Heads Or Tails

If you click on the graphic above, it will take you to the awesome HoT blog where you can sign up and start participating in this fun and popular meme!

This week's theme is TAILS - Photograph - Share any photograph and explain why you did.
OK, I chose to share this photo because... ummmm.... well.... there isn't really a ... umm... cuz... Yeah! That's it! Just cuz! Cuz I like it, and just cuz. :-D

(c) Misty DawnS

So... I did it. I shared a photo and told you why (kinda). Oh come on, this is not rocket science or software development, I simply think this photograph is pretty, and I wanted to share something pretty with my friends.

I'm Losing My Memory!

I've got a problem...
I'm using up all the memory on my laptop!!!
Seriously when I first got this laptop, I thought there would be no way I would ever use up all that memory, but when you use a camera that is over 14 megapixels, and you shoot in RAW + JPEG format (two large files are created for each photo), you start eating the memory... FAST.
I just don't know what to do. I've got a portable hard drive, but I've heard scary stories about people transferring everything to a portable hard drive and then the hard drive crashed and they lost everything. If I lost all my photos, you might as well shoot me! So, it is recommended to have at least two backups... but, as I just stated, that would require hard drives with a lot of memory... a.k.a. expensive!
So, I just don't know what to do... I don't want to use up all my laptop memory, but I also don't want to risk losing my data.
My other problem... my laptop keys are getting wore out and they continue to pop off the keyboard. Yes, I know, I know - it's because I use it too much... but, hey, I use this for two of my three jobs! It's mainly the vowels (especially the "a" key) - so, if my posts start looking funny because there are no vowels in the words, you'll know what's going on!

Camera-Critters #77

My co-worker (and office partner) has asked me to take her family photos. Before you say anything - I realize I'm not a portrait photographer, and I have made she sure knows that too. She's seen my "people photos", and she likes them. She wants some more 'candid' photos, rather than posed portraits. That, I can do. So, she wants her photo shoot to be when the leaves have changed colors for the fall season. They have started to change some, but not very much yet.

Yesterday, we took our lunch break together and went driving around scoping out different places to take some photos. While we were out and about, we met these two critters.

Well, fall is here, and the colder weather is on its way too. *sigh* No more bugs... the closest thing I'll get to a macro bug shot for awhile is if I take photos of someone's Ladybug steam cleaner! ahaha Oh well, I'm sure I'll be able to find other photography subjects.

Mmmmmm Foooood

As many of you know... well, those of you who also marked me as a friend on Facebook... I went to do some "food photography" this weekend. I had never even attempted such a thing before, so I really didn't have a clue what I was doing. I did, however, read some websites with tips and advice on food photography prior to my venture.

Now, I must admit, I'm not very happy with the shots I created. I am by NO means a professional food photographer. I'm thinking I better stick to wildlife, bugs, flowers, and sunsets... but, still... I think these will still make you reach for the safety products we call napkins, diet pills, or just plain ol' utensils!

As I said... I better stick to wildlife and nature shots... but I guess I didn't do too bad for my first time trying a whole different type of photography.

Heads or Tails *Book*

Heads Or Tails

If you click on the graphic above, it will take you to the awesome HoT blog where you can sign up and start participating in this fun and popular meme! You can order those horse supplements for your equine pets at any time - but you can only play HoT on Tuesday!

This week's theme is HEADS - Book. So, I thought I'd tell you about a book which I'm anticipating greatly. It is by Sara Donati and is a part of her Wilderness Series (which many of you have heard me go on obsessively about in the past). Sara Donati says this will be the last book of the series (*sniff* *sob*), but I'm hoping that Hannah and the rest of the characters insist on another. ;-)

There it is, and I can't wait! It is supposed to be published in early 2010. Lately, I haven't had time to read for enjoyment, and I've missed that part of my life greatly. However, I will MAKE time to read this book... which I'm sure I'll finish in one weekend, as I have with her other books of this series.

Camera-Critters #76

* * Edited to Add - My friends, Matouk is alive and well. When I say I miss him so much, it's because he and my dad are in Ohio... 750 miles away. So, I miss them both a LOT. * *

(c) Misty DawnS

I was needing a wolf-fix. ;-) I miss that guy up there in the photo. I miss those amber eyes staring into mine and reading my thoughts. I miss his goofy antics and his soulful songs. I miss taking long walks with him and observing him in the surroundings that he loves so much. I miss sitting on the patio furniture and watching him and Dad interact with each other; they are truly best friends who were meant to be brought together. *sigh* Well, in honor of missing Matouk - I'm going to do exactly what he'd want me to do... I'm going for a nature walk.

It's Not Always Perfect

(c) Misty DawnS

Are you confused by the title? Well, just as this web in the photo is not perfect, it made me realize that the "web of life" we weave is not always 'perfect' in our own opinions. Things go wrong, things get hectic and we let our hobbies of enjoyment go to the wayside in order to keep up with the hectic life, just as I've done lately. Would you believe that I haven't even gone for a photography walk for weeks? It's true. My main passion has been put on the back burner... but that's OK, because that's what needs to be done right now. It's called "Life", and it makes the rules - whether we like it or not. When I could be taking photos or writing blog posts about the best fat burners, I'm too tired. It's called "Life". Yeah, I know I've already said that, but I'm repeating myself - I do that. That's "Life". LOL, y'all getting annoyed with me yet???

Anyway - this photo is from the morning of a much-needed day off work. I woke early, because my body has grown accustomed to that. I walked back to our pond and was surrounded by fog. Just as I got to the pond, the sun was starting to slowly burn the fog away, and what I saw was very surreal to me. I was surrounded by fog, and I was also surrounded by webs of pearls. Yes, they were spider webs, but at that moment, it was so surreal and beautiful, it took my breath away. I just stood there, with camera in hand, trying to figure out how I could possibly capture this moment as I was seeing it. I don't think I did adequately capture it as I would have liked, but sometimes, "it's not always perfect", yet you have to be thankful to just have been there to experience it. As Forrest Gump would say - "That's all I've got to say 'bout that."

Well, I promised y'all that I would tell you the results of the fair photography competition as soon as I found out what the results were... (c) Misty DawnS

"Aww Nuts"

(c) Misty DawnS

So, there you have it... while not as soon as promised... the results of the fair photography competition. I didn't do as well as last year, but that's O.K. I think I entered some quality photos - even the ones which didn't get ribbons. Here's the ironic thing - some of the ones which didn't get ribbons were the ones everyone was SURE would get ribbons. HaHa! Go figure!

The Holiday Season Is Almost Here...

Believe it or not, the "Holiday Season" is just around the corner. It's going to be here before we know it. I know, I know, I can't believe it either, but it's true. I've got a bad habit of procrastinating on my shopping until the very last minute. Each year, I say I'm going to be like my sister-in-law and get my shopping done way ahead of time, but, to be honest, it never happens. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that there really aren't many stores around here to choose from when doing holiday shopping. Therefore, I end up doing most, if not all, of my shopping online. Besides, you can't beat picking out gifts without fighting crowds and having those purchases delivered right to your door without any hassle.
We all know about and have been affected in some way by the current state of the economy. Well, shopping early helps avoid the higher holiday prices and helps ensure you get the item you want without having to endure stressful measures to locate that item when availability gets low. I'm thinking it makes the most sense, and avoiding stress and high costs are both things that I could really benefit from right now!

So, tell me - when do you do your holiday shopping? Are you one of those people who are done way before the holidays arrive, or do you end up scrambling at the last minute?

Camera-Critters #75

Mmmmom!!!
(c) Misty DawnS

Yes, Junior?
(c) Misty DawnS

Ummm, there's a lady behind that hay bale over there.
(c) Misty DawnS

Junior! What have I told you!
Those are just nightmares!
There really aren't crazy ladies with one big eye
running around and hiding behind haybales.
Those are just stories your brother told you to scare you!
(c) Misty DawnS

Are you SURE Mom?
(c) Misty DawnS

But... uhhhh....
(c) Misty DawnS

Junior! At some point, you are going to have to grow up
and be a big buck and give up these little fawnish fears.
(c) Misty DawnS

I'll be just like Dad someday?
(c) Misty DawnS

Goodnight Junior.
No more stories about ladies with one big flashing eye
hiding behind hay bales, OK?
But.... *sigh* OK, Mom.

The Results...

I'm going to tell you the results of the fair photography contest...

Just Kidding!!! I don't know yet!!!

However, I will know sometime tonight, because my aunt-in-law is going to the fair and is supposed to call me with the photography contest results. So, when I know, you will know. I promise.

I did submit a photo of the Novinger/Kirksville tornado destruction. I'm not sure if that photo will do well though, because it is a pretty emotional photo... especially if you were in and survived the tornado.

The main categories we are looking for results in are the animal, floral, and people categories. You got your fingers crossed???

Camera-Critters #74

Well, most of these photos will be repeats, but that's because this Camera Critters post has a theme. On Tuesday, I will be taking my photos to the fair's photography contest. So, I thought I'd share with you the critters who will be giving their best poses for their chance for a ribbon in the Animal Category (except the very last photo will be in the floral category). I'd also like to give a shout out to The Photo Shop of Ottumwa, Iowa, for the fast and quality printing. So, without further ado (or rambling, as I tend to do)... I present to you the 2009 critter fair entries...

Awww Nuts

I've Got Eyes For You
(c) Misty DawnS

Sly & Foxy
(c) Misty DawnS

After a couple of extremely hectic and stressful weeks, I'm going to get away from it all for a little while. Great company, good food, campfire chats, and the stars as the outdoor lights. Oh... it's going to be nice.

Where I've Been

(c) Misty DawnS

Have you been wondering where I've been? Probably not, but I'm going to tell you anyway since I've gone from posting almost every day to posting once a week. And, that's only because I am responsible for hosting a meme. Sounds terrible, doesn't it? Well, it's because my day job has been absolutely hectic and crazy. We're in a big crunch time, my secretary left for a teaching position, and I'm left trying to get everything done. I've been working over 50 hour weeks, and I'm exhausted. Every time I think I may be getting caught up, I have a day where everything seems to be falling apart - like today. To say I'm "burnt" is an understatement. I will get through it, however... eventually... no matter how long it takes.

I do have a VERY long weekend coming up, and if I had a television on a flat panel mount on my bedroom wall, I think I'd spend the entire long weekend in bed... well, except for my photo-walks, of course, which, believe it or not, I haven't been taking. *sigh* OH - Tuesday is the day I take my photos to the fair for the photography contest. I know a photography contest in a rural small-county fair isn't a big deal to most people, but it's something I've done since I moved here, and I always get excited about it. Yes, it doesn't take much to excite me, I guess.

So - that's where I've been... working, waging a war against some mice, and trying to sleep. Heck, I've even been packaging financial aid in my sleep! I'll be back to blogging regularly again... sometime. I fear that by then, though, I won't have any readers! Oh well, such is life.
