Camera-Critters #108

It was a rainy day. Seriously. It rained, and it rained, and it continued to rain some more. Thankfully, I was at work during all this rain. So, it didn't really bother me, because the rain wasn't causing me to miss out on anything I was going to have the chance to enjoy. Then, it was time to go home from work. Now, it would be reallly nice if it would stop raining. My wish came true, and when I pulled in my driveway at home, I got out of the vehicle and looked at our yard, and I immediately went and grabbed the camera out of the passenger seat... yeah, my camera has its own seat... maybe I DO buckle it in with the seat belt so it's safe, and maybe I don't... what's it to ya?

Anyway, as I was saying... are you listening? Or, are you thinking about bpi training? C'mon now. As I was saying... I grabbed my camera, because I wanted to capture the raindrops on the dandelions. It looked really awesome. There will be another photo and post to come soon, but first, I wanted to show you my unexpected friend, whom I met that day. Yeah, we became quite close. ;-)

I strongly suggest clicking on the photo
to view it larger - it's worth it.

Looking at the Sky on Friday *The Best Camera*

On another blog, which I frequent, there are regular photography 'assignments' and prizes for the photos chosen. Many people have been stating that they "cannot compete" because they "only have a point and shoot camera" or they can't take good photos because they "can't afford a DSLR". Many other people have responded that it's not the camera that makes the photo, but the photographer, which I completely agree with. The best quote I read there was, "The best camera is the one you have with you." This is so true. You have to work with what you have. If you want to be a photographer, you utilize the camera you have, and you practice, and you learn. Take photos of EVERYTHING from the sky to the garage floor. My point is... having a professional camera does not make a person a professional photographer.

So, this conversation, and the fact that this is my 1000th POST, prompted me to reminisce and go through some of my photos from pre-DSLR times. I decided to use one of those photos for this week's Looking at the Sky on Friday. This photo was taken during the vacation we took my step-daughter on as her high school graduation present.

P.S. Sometime this weekend, there will be a giveaway posted on this blog to celebrate my 1000th post.

The 8th Photo Meme

My BBFF, Tammy, tagged me for this photo meme. The instructions are:

1) Go to your photo files, select the 8th photo folder.
2) Select the 8th photo in that folder.
3) Post that photo along with the story behind it.
4) Then challenge 8 blogging friends to do the same!

Well, I guess I'm a rebel, because I'm going to break a few rules here.

First, I'm at work (Hey, I'm on a break so back off!). I don't have 8 photo folders on my computer at work. I just have some photos in my 'pictures' folder. So, I decided to simply use the 8th photo in that folder.

The 8th photo in my pictures folder just happens to be my first photo which ever won an award. It won First Place at the local fair when we moved out here. After it won first place, my dad made an absolutely beautiful frame for it (he is outstanding with woodworking). So, it now hangs in my living room.

(c) Misty DawnS
The other rule I'm breaking is that I'm not going to tag anyone. There aren't eight people who regularly read my blog anymore, and I'm not going to force people to visit just to see what I tagged them for. LOL So, if you do visit, then consider yourself tagged!
Also, if you have not done so already, I would REALLY appreciate it if you would go read this post and then vote on the poll in the sidebar. THANKS SO MUCH!

You Never Know

This past Friday, on my way home from work, I saw a very terrible accident scene. It was so bad that I was shaken up by it for quite awhile even after I got home. I thought for sure, from the looks of the accident, that there were injuries. When I told Hubs about it, he made some phone calls, and found out that his mom and aunt actually drove through the area immediately after the accident happened. Unbelievably, and thankfully, other than a bloody nose and some scrapes, no one was hurt. The people who were not at fault in the accident were high school kids on their way to prom.

Yesterday morning, there was an acccident involving a bicycle and a semi in the city where I work. Unfortunately, this accident resulted in death. These events have caused me to stop and relize that anything can happen... at any time. You don't know when. As they say, "Life Happens". Just because you are young, doesn't necessarily mean you've got decades ahead of you. I apologize if I sound morbid, that's not my intention. I'm just waking up and making myself accept reality.

My husband has life insurance, but I do not. I've been wondering if I need to research life insurance policies. I don't want him to struggle financially, in addition to emotionally, if something were to happen. Obviously I wouldn't qualify for Texas life insurance, but maybe I do need to see if there is an inexpensive policy I would qualify for... just for that peace of mind.

Favor Please...

Hello my wonderful friends. I have a favor to ask. If you happen to be reading this post, and you happen to have a free couple minutes, would you mind popping over to Misty's Words, reading this post, and then commenting or voting on the poll on the sidebar? I will be forever grateful for your time, opinion, any advice you have to offer, and, always, your friendship!

You see, once again, I'm unable to make a decision about something. Well, actually, I DO make the decision, but then, a couple hours later or the next day, I think that maybe that was the wrong decision. So, I'm asking for your opinion. You don't have to comment specifically on the post - if you want to remain anonymous in your opinion, you can simply vote in the poll on the sidebar.

Once again - I really appreciate it!

Camera-Critters #107

Why hello there! Nice to meet you!
My name is Meadow Lark.
No, no, there's no need to call me Mr. Lark.
We don't need to be that formal.
So, you'd like to take my photo, huh?
Well, I must admit...
I am quite attractive.
(c) Misty DawnS

Do you prefer the side view?
I really am gorgeous at all angles.
It doesn't matter really.
Seriously, what do you prefer?
You want me looking at you?
Or, do you want me acting pensive?
(c) Misty DawnS

Woman!!! Are you even listening to me?!?!
How am I supposed to work with you,
if you aren't listening to me???
(c) Misty DawnS

O.K. Fine!
Just take my portrait!
Please notice how my colors are coordinated with the Dandelions.
Yeah, I planned it that way when I got ready this morning.
I could be in commercials, don'tcha think?
I could be the cover photo of something like a lipofuze review, right?
Yeah, I've got it going on.
I'm what they call. HHHHHOT!
Just sayin'.
When you've got it, you've got it. Ya know?
Yeah, H.O.T.! Like sizzlin'. Like FINE!

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Reflections*

As I said on Misty's Words, I am very, very late posting my Looking at the Sky Posts this week. However, I had photos that I wanted to post specifically for this meme, so I decided to post them, late or not.

(c) Misty DawnS

After a stressful and rough several days, I grabbed my fishing pole, the worms, and my fishing bucket (which I sit on until I catch some fish), and I headed back to one of my favorite places... our pond. Honestly, it doesn't matter if I catch any fish or not; Just being back at the pond relaxes me and helps me forget about everything which is causing my stress. It calms me and helps me think more clearly, whether it be about something like face wrinkle cream, or something more serious like the goals I have set for myself. It's just like my nature walks. They are both wonderful releases for me. So, as I was sitting there relaxing, I couldn't help but 'see the photo' which was right in front of me. Of course, I always have the camera with me. So, I grabbed the camera and captured what I was seeing. Then, I went back to my fishing.

New Friend Friday #1

I'm going to be late with my Looking at the Sky on Friday post. So, in the meantime, until I can get home to my photos, I decided to try a newe meme. It's called New Friend Friday. It's all about finding new blogs, which you wouldn't necessarily find without this meme.

I'm constantly amazed at the increasing number of blogs I find, which I feel I just HAVE to follow, because they are so great. I'm sure I'll find more blogs like that while playing this meme. Problem is, my Google Reader is out of control!!! Hello. My name is Misty, and I'm a blog-following addict. Yes, I realize there is no cure. So, I'm joining a meme to enable myself. HA!

Here are the rules:
•Add a link to your main blog
•Visit the blog of the person whose name is above your name in the list and comment on their blog.
•Visit as many blogs as you can and leave comments telling them you are visiting from New Friend Friday at The Girl Creative.
•There is no obligation to follow everyone who follows you. Please just follow the blogs that are of interest to you. :)

So, grab a button, post it somewhere on your blog and get ready to make some new friends!

Quite easy to join and sounds like fun, right? You should join too! Who knows, you just might find a new best friend... someone you'll end up talking to every day about everything from age spot removal to the family goldfish. C'mon, you know you wanna play! See ya there!

Hey PW... You Ever Had a Sink Full of Em???

There's a certain blogger whose site I visit quite frequently. O.K., to be honest, I check all sections of her blog every day. I'm sure many of you have heard of her, and I'm sure many of you also frequent her blog. She's a wonderful writer and a wonderful photographer and a very successful blogger. She's known as... The Pioneer Woman. Now that I've said her name, and you know about my life, I guess you're probably not surprised that I frequent her blog. We live somewhat similar lives. We both are married to farmers (she calls hers a rancher). We both have Border Collies (She has one. I have three). We both love photography. O.K. I guess it ends there. She's rich, and I'm not (am I jealous, of course, but I still love her). She's got children, and I don't (see parentheses above). She's a magnificent cook, and I have no clue how to behave in the kitchen. Did I mention I'm jealous? Yeah, I'm not too proud to admit that. Not only do I admire the woman, but I must admit that I idolize the woman too.

If you have visited her site, you will know that her tag line is "plowing through life in the country... one calf nut at a time". Let me tell ya - I've been reading this woman's blog for years. Why? Because I can relate. Ohhhhh... can I relate. My life may not be identical to hers, but when it comes to the cows, and a few other things, I can SO relate.

So... I've watched her photograph the counting of calf nuts. I've watched her sneak and put calf nuts on her brother-in-law's hat. I've seen many photos of calf nuts on her blog.

I have to wonder...

Has she ever had...

Just Wonderin'

Cuz my sink is full of em' right now.

To tell you the complete story...
Hubs came home from working cattle this morning. I was on the phone (cell phone) with my dad when he came home. I heard him running water in our sink, but I ignored that. A little bit later, he called someone on the other phone, and I heard him say, "I've got a sink full of oysters if you want some." My dad, who could hear him, asked, "What did he just say you have a sink full of? I LOVE oysters!" I said, "Daddy, he just came in from working cattle. Basically, to put it simply, we've got a sink full of calf nuts, Dad."

My Davey-Crockett-like-dad started laughing and said, "Honey, I've been accused of having many, many weird things in my kitchen, but I can honestly say I've NEVER had a sink full of calf nuts. So, you guys have one up on me!"

Miss Maggie May doesn't swim. In fact, when she decides to wade in the water, she's very cautious. I know that she COULD swim, but she just chooses not to. Tag, on the other hand, LOVES to swim. When it comes to swimming, Molly could take it or leave it. When either of the other two are swimming (this generally involves Tag going to get a stick or toy that Daddy threw for him), Maggie May will stand on the shore and just stare at them like, "You guys are completely nuts!" It always makes me laugh.

Well, I was quite surprised the other day when I walked back to our pond with Molly and Maggie. I was looking around (had my camera) and all of a sudden, I heard a splash. I turned to see that Maggie had just decided to jump in the pond. No, she didn't go deep enough where she would actually have to swim, but she DID go in up to her neck, which was quite surprising.

It was so surprising that I wish I would have had a security camera set up to record the whole thing, because when I told Hubs about it, he was very doubtful. I asked, "You thinking I'm exaggerating?" He said, "No, I just know Maggie."

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Where There's Smoke...*

Two weeks ago, on a Sunday, Hubs and I were watching television together.
I got up to go to the bathroom, and when I came back, Hubs was standing outside.
I went to the door, and he said "I saw a little puff of smoke over there."
By the time he finished saying that, I looked over, and there was a lot
more than just a 'puff' of smoke!
So, we jumped in the vehicle and drove towards the smoke,
which was now rolling thickly into the sky.

When we found the source of the smoke,
this is what we saw...
(c) Misty DawnS

My heart fell into my stomach. Did someone live there? Was there anyone inside? Is someone losing all their possessions, such as their camera, their family photos, their epson tm-t88iv, their clothes, their family heirlooms, and anything else they hold precious to them? OMG, I hope there was no one inside!

You see, disasters such as this are some of my biggest fears. I just panic when I think about starting my day as normal and then all of a sudden having everything as I know it stripped away from me, without my having any control over it. So, it was just natural for me to tear up and even feel guilty for taking photos.

However, Hubs did later find out that no one was inside, and no one was living in the house. I guess they were fixing it up (which breaks my heart too), but thankfully no one was injured.

Corny Captions Shirts? What'cha think?

As many of you know, I made a promise to myself that this year would be the year I would strive to make something happen with my photography. Even if nothing happens, at least I tried as I promised myself I would.

I've spent a lot of time working on one main website, and I've messed around a bit with two other sites. On some of the sites, you can create apparel with your photography. I thought of using some of my photos and "corny captions to consider" to create some funny tshirts, in addition to selling prints and other items.

Of course the prints and other, more serious, items would be my main venue, but humor sells, and humor shirts seem to be quite popular on these types of sites. I know that my photography is mainly artistic and strives to capture beauty, but I'm thinking I could create some t-shirts with farm and animal humor. What do you think? Hmmmm... maybe they'd feature me on Color Overload. Ya never know!

They're Back

(c) Misty DawnS
I didn't get out much this weekend, even though the weather was absolutely perfect. I managed to get a sinus infection and was quite miserable the entire weekend. However, it was much easier for me to breathe when I was outside, so I would go outside as often as possible for a little bit of relief. That's when I saw it!!! The flutter-bys are coming back!!! WooooHoooo I saw a couple Cabbage Whites, and I saw an orange butterfly go flittering over my pond, but I was too far away to correctly identify it. All that matters though is they are back! I'm so excited. Right now, they are on the move quite a bit, because there really aren't any flowers in bloom for them to stop and visit. Soon though... soon :-D

A Bed For Our Boy

(c) Misty DawnS

That's my boy... errrr, I mean Daddy's Boy, Tag. Everything Tag does, he does at 110%. He gives everything he's got in everything he does. Because of this, and his excessive love for working outside on the farm with his "dad", Taggy's body suffers. We believe he has early onset arthritis, and by the end of the day, his movements and walking are labored.

For this reason, Tag gets the special pleasure of sleeping upstairs where there are softer places to sleep. At one point, we had one of those large dog beds for him to lay on, but we don't have it anymore.

As you know, my dogs mean the world to me. Therefore, I started looking for another dog bed for Tag to have upstairs. I want him to be able to stretch out and be comfortable, so I've been browsing extra large dog beds for him. Hubs has even come up with some ideas for trying to make Tag a comfortable place to sleep. One way or another, we'll provide him with as much comfort as we can. No, my dogs are not spoiled - they're just well loved. ;-)

Camera-Critters #105

(c) Misty DawnS

Ummm George?

Yes, Dear?

George, there's a weird creature over there. It stands on two legs like one of those humans, but it has a big eye sticking out of its head which moves back and forth. No, George! Don't look!!! We don't know if it's dangerous! Certainly seems harmless enough, though.

Don't worry, Dear! I will stand big and tall! I will protect you from anything! Nothing will get by me! I will change into my super-goose costume and save not only you, my dear, but the whole Wooooorld!

Oh for crying out loud, George! You're a goose! Just a goose! You are NOT some super-goose-hero! Geesh! You been drinking the creek water again?

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Archi-Personality*

(c) Misty DawnS

I'm a lifetime member of a photography forum, which is made up of some amazingly talented photographers. On this forum, they post "projects", in which you are supposed to take a photo which applies to your interpretation of the theme, and after the time is up, they post all of the entries for voting. The above photo was my first entry in one of their projects. The theme was "archi-personality". You were supposed to take a photo of part of a building which you thought represented the personality of the building. Well, when I saw the shadow of our windmill against our barn, I thought it screamed "farm personality" on the barn. So, I entered it. It really doesn't stand up against the other entries, but I don't think it was too bad of an idea for my first try.

Before you continue your research on differin, why don't you join this great meme? Just click on the badge at the top of this post. You won't regret it!

Just Call Me Sony-Girl

I've made a decision... finally. Ummm... I think. Yes, I have a terrible time with decisions. I especially have a terrible time with making a decision about a purchase which will cost money... especially if it's going to cost what, in my opinion, is quite a bit of money.

It took me months and months to finally decide on the right camera for me. I read reviews, both from experts and also from customers. I put a lot of credit on the customer reviews, because I figure they are normal people, just like me (did I just claim to be normal?), and they have nothing to gain or lose by the review they provide.

So, now that it's time to purchase a new laptop, I'm back to the exhausting process... read reviews; think I've decided; read more reviews; change my mind; read more reviews; change my mind again... it's a looooong ongoing process with me. I may need some intervention.

Well, I think I have finally made a decision. Keep me away from more reviews or I'll be at this for months. Ironically, I've decided on a laptop by the same manufacturer as my camera. Looks like I'm gonna be a Sony-girl through and through.

My lawyer-boss told me that, with as much as I use my laptop, I should be a laptop tester and reviewer. That actually made a LOT of sense to me (much more sense than if he would have said I should test and review a fat burner). I use my laptop several hours every day. My first laptop had series heat emission problems and would leave burns on my legs. My current laptop has a bad keyboard and the keys continuously pop off the keyboard. Now, I'll be going to my third laptop. Maybe I really SHOULD do periodic reviews of it. Maybe it would help someone else who is struggling with a decision just like I have been. I think that might be a good idea. I'll keep ya posted.

True Colours Thursday *Lavender*

This week's color for True Colours is "Lavender"

Ohhhhh... I LOVE PURPLE! Purple is my favorite color... whether it be plum, lavender, ANY shade of purple works for me! Purple, purple, purple! I love purple! We could talk about acne breakout, but let's talk about purple breakout instead! I love when the wildflowers start blooming around our ponds, woods, and fields. I especially love the... you guessed it... PURPLE flowers. Asters, such as the ones in the photo below are some of my favorite wildflowers, because... well, do I really need to say??? Because they're purple, of course! Yes, I think I'm a bit obsessed. ;-)

Mr. Beautiful Man, why are you flaunting your beauty so???

(c) Misty DawnS

Is it O.K. to call a guy beautiful?
Do you mind if I call you beautiful?
Whew, that's good, because you ARE beautiful.

(c) Misty DawnS

My GOODness, you are GORGEOUS... with a capital G, and, well, capital everything else too!
Are you flaunting your beauty just for me?
I'm so honored.

(c) Misty DawnS

So, you're wanting to be the next TOP Male Pheasant Model, eh?
Is that it?
I think you win. Hands down.
I'm so honored you are showing off for me!

(c) Misty DawnS

Oh... NOW the truth comes out!!!
It had nothing to do with me, huh?
You just led me on.
Let me think you were flaunting your stuff for me!
I don't really mean anything to you, do I?
It's O.K., I'll only cry for a little while.
Besides, who can blame ya?
You're so gorgeous, you've not only got me admiring you, but also...
not one, not two, but THREE other ladies following you around!

(c) Misty DawnS

Take your pic, my Dear. I'll be O.K. with it...
as long as you have LOTS of beautiful babies for me to photograph :-)

Shelly the Sheep Says...

(c) Misty DawnS

Shelly the sheep requested to make a guest post on my blog today. We bickered back and forth about it for awhile. That is, we bickered until she told me WHY she wanted to post. She kept saying she had something important to say... something very important to share with my readers. I kept responding with, "What are you gonna do, try to sell ping pong tables on my blog? Who's gonna listen to a sheep anyway?" Seriously, it's just a lot of blah, baaaaaaa, blah, baaaaaaah, and baaaaack and forth when you're arguing with a sheep.

Then she told me...

I want to remind everyone that tomorrow is the 2nd year anniversary of Camera-Critters!

Well heck, Shelly, why didn't you just say that. We could have save a lot of time arguing and spent more time decided what critters to post! Geesh, sheep!

Today, I believe and trust NOTHING

Just to let y'all know, I'm not believing or trusting anything today. I'm sorry, I just can't.

You see...

On this day, one year ago, I begrudgingly woke up when the alarm went off (man it was extra hard to get up that morning), got ready for work, and on my way out the door, I commented to Hubs about how very dark it was. He said, "Oh, I can see the sun starting to come up over there."

I shrugged my shoulders and proceeded to start on my way to work. As I was driving, the guy on the radio said, "It's 5:35, and here's your weather." WAIT! What??? Back up... it's WHAT time??? It's 6:35, not FIVE 35.

So, I called Hubs. "Honey," (You see how sweet I am to HIM???) "What time is it?" He replied, "6:35, why?" I said, "Well, the guy on the radio just said it's FIVE 35." Hubs replied, "Ohhhh, he's just messed up, they do that a lot." So, I continue driving...

AND, the guy on the radio NOW says "It's 5:42, and here's the news." "HUUUUUUUUBS! He said it again!!!"

It was at this point, that my husband said "April Fools! Now you've got time to go grocery shopping before work!"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO... now I've got time to turn this vehicle around, come back home, and do some SERIOUS bodily injury to my soon-to-be EX husband, who made me lose a precious hour of sleep!

So, yes, he got me good. The man even went out and changed the clock in my vehicle!!! I SHOULD have checked the clock on my cell phone, because you can't change time on cell phones, but it just never occured to me.

Now, you can certainly understand why today - I trust nothing and I believe nothing. I will resume normal life on April 2.
