Today's Flowers *Rattlesnakes and Blazing Stars*

The two flowers in the photo below are common along the rows of berries we planted back by our pond. The purple flower, which resembles a purple cattail, is Liatris Pycnostachys, with the common name of Prairie Blazing Star. The butterflies really like this flower, which results in my really liking this flower. hehe

The plant with the round spikey balls is Eryngium Yuccifolium with the common name of Rattlesnake Master. This plant is in the carrot family. It is called Rattlesnake Master because the pioneers believed that the root could be an antidote to rattlesnake bites.

Camera-Critters #121

I haven't been able to get out and take pictures the past few days, because I somehow got my sciatic nerve pinched and have been spending most of my time in bed. However, before that happened, I was able to capture some photos of a Halloween Pennant back by my pond. Halloween Pennants have a special spot in my heart, because one of my Halloween Pennant photos was my first photo to win an award at the local fair.

I couldn't decide if I preferred the vertical crop or the horizontal crop. So, I need your opinion! Which crop do you like?

Vertical crop?

I hope to be up and about so I can take more photos soon! When I was chatting with Tammy the other day, she said she had to pay her car insurance, and I'm so glad she said that, because it reminded me that I had to pay Hub's health insurance! The pain I was in had caused me to forget all other things. Thanks for the reminder, Tam!

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Mogadore Reservoir Sunset*

Another photo of the beautiful sunset I enjoyed with my dad and Matouk while visiting Ohio. It was breathtaking, and these photos will continually remind me of the great time I had.

On another note, I can't believe how fast the summer is passing by us! Maybe it's because of all the rain we've had here, but I feel like I really haven't had much chance to enjoy summer, and here it is almost August!!! You know what that means. That means back to school for the kids and back to school shopping for the parents. I may not have kids, but I do realize what the economy is like right now, and I realize how important it is to be able to save money any chance we can. Whether it be using online coupons to save on your purchases, or shopping online to take advantage of "online only" offers, I hope you are able to take advantage of saving a bit of money. So, I just wanted to take the chance to tell you about a website (you can visit by clicking the link above), which provides you the opportunity to shop at over 800 stores online. You save money with coupons, and have the convenience of paying cash for your purchases online or picking your puchaces up at the local store. I know that many of my blogging friends are very thrifty and always taking advantage of money saving opportunities. So, hopefully this gives you more ideas!

ABC Wednesday *B is for Blimp*

This week, we are on the letter "B" for the really fun and challenging ABC Wednesday meme, and I am excited, because I've truly got a couple "B" photos that fit perfectly!

While I was visiting Ohio, Dad and I went out fishing on Wingfoot Lake, and I was able to snap some photos of the Goodyear Blimp. I grew up watching the Goodyear Blimp fly overhead, but it was, of course, up in the sky. This is the closest I have actually ever been to it, and I felt like a little girl staring in awe at something that was a big part of my childhood.

Ironically, on my flight to Ohio, I sat next to a guy who was returning home after being away for six weeks on business for Goodyear.

Here's some history of the Goodyear Blimps that I found on the Goodyear Blimp website:

"Since 1925, Goodyear blimps have adorned the skies as very visible corporate icons of the world's largest tire and rubber company that began operations in 1898.

In the 1930s, Goodyear built two giant rigid airships for the Navy. Within their envelopes, they had internal metal frames used to maintain their shape. The aircraft measured more than two football fields in length and needed 6.5 million cubic feet of helium to become airborne at its gross weight of more than 400,000 pounds.

The USS Akron and USS Macon were designed as aerial aircraft carriers and could launch and retrieve specially equipped planes while in flight. Although a good concept, sadly, both airships were lost in storms within two years of going into service, effectively ending the era of the rigid airships.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Goodyear built a series of large surveillance airships used to protect merchant fleets along the coast. They also served as early warning radar stations. Some of these airships could stay aloft for more than a week at a time. In fact, an airship of this type still holds the flying endurance record of 11 days in flight. The airship was a Goodyear-built ZPG-2 called the Snow Bird. In March 1957, it flew from Weymouth, Massachusetts, to Europe and Africa and back to Key West, Florida, without refueling or landing.

Today, Goodyear operates three airships in the United States -- the Spirit of America, based in the City of Carson, California; the Spirit of Goodyear, based in Akron, Ohio; and the Spirit of Innovation, based in Pompano Beach, Florida.

I took this photo for comparison of size.
You will see a semi tractor and trailer on the right of the photo.

Ruby Tuesday *Garden Yummy*

Yummmmmy! It's that time of year! Time for the gardens to start producing all the fresh, home-grown, yummy stuff! The photo below was taken last month. I am a little bit afraid to go out and look at the garden right now, considering we had about eight inches of rain Monday night and have had more rain throughout the week. All the corn was laying down after that night of constant, massive thunderstorms. However, the corn is trying to pick itself back up now. Since corn on the cob is one of my most favorite things EVAH, I run outside and cheer the stalks on and give them words of encouragement. What? Haven't you heard it's good to talk to plants? Why wouldn't fruit and veggie plants be the same? Just sayin'.

The strawberries were actually a surprise,
because we didn't think they would start producting
until next year.

I certainly won't have to buy diet pills if our garden of
healthy food succeeds!

Macro & Mellow Yellow Monday *Mating Eastern Forktails*

This isn't a true "macro" photo by the actual definition of macro photography. However, I think I can get this one to slide through, since the main subject of the photo is a pair of mating Eastern Forktail damselflies, and they are rather small critters.

When I took this image, being the bug addict I am, I, of course, was focused on photographing the mating pair. Yes, I realize this, once again, makes me look like a voyeur. Will I get arrested for posting bug porn on the web? Anyway, as I was saying... I was focused on photographing the damselflies. Later, when I looked at the image on my computer, I realized that I got some really cool bokeh too! :-)

Today's Flowers *Hosta Bokeh*

My dad had Hostas planted all around his home, and they looked so pretty! I was amazed at how they withstood a certain wolf dragging his leash through them while he was hooked on his run. The one day, my dad needed to go help another family member whose truck had broke down. Since my uncle didn't have any testosterone boosters that work and couldn't push his truck home, my dad decided he would go pick him up and bring him home. Yeah, our family is good like that. LOL Anyway, while Dad was gone, I decided to take some photos of his flowers. I really like how the leaves of the Hosta really make the bokeh background in this photo look like green waves.

PhotoHunt *Hanging*

The theme for PhotoHunt this week is "hanging". So, of course, I decided to use another photo from my recent trip back to Ohio to visit friends and family. Dad, Matouk, and I had gone for a walk and were just 'hanging out' together and enjoying each others' company. When we were pulling back out of the parking lot to head back home, Dad saw this butterfly and commented on how large it was. He was saying that he thought only the yellow ones were that big. I explained that I thought this might be a Black Tiger Swallowtail, as the yellow ones he was referring to are Tiger Swallowtails.

So, of course, he stopped so I could go out and take photos of it. It wasn't a very cooperative model for me. It kept wanting to 'hang' upside down and just look at me, rather than allow me to photograph its damaged, yet pretty, wings!

Camera-Critters #120

This is my "brother", Matouk. He's my dad's wolfdog; Or, I could say my dad is Matouk's human, because they both spend a lot of time training each other. In fact, I'm not sure who has been trained more.

This photo was NOT posed. Many of you won't believe me, but I, in no way, set this photo up. I had been sitting on the couch reading a book while my dad was out mowing. Toukie was down the hall asleep on my dad's bed (spoiled much?). When I got up to go to the bathroom, I heard Touk get out of Dad's bed. I smiled, because I knew exactly what he was doing. When I came back out to the living room, Toukie had stolen my spot on the couch and was curled up by the book like I had been. When I pulled the camera out, Touk pushed the book open with his nose. Then I watched in disbelief as he used his paw to flip through some of the pages. He HAD to have learned that from watching us! It was amazing. He's intelligent beyond belief. Next thing ya know, he'll be operating a computer after watching us check here and click there! LOL

Wanna know the title of the book?
"Promise of the Wolves"
Appropriate, eh?

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Company While Fishing*

While I was back home on vacation, Dad and I were able to get in some fishing time. Since this is both of our favorite pastimes (we could do catalog printing on all we know about fishing), we were both in our element. Usually, I out-fish my daddy... hey, I'm just saying. However, I WILL suck it up and admit that he out-fished me TWO out of three fishing trips. I told him that I was going easy on him, but I'm worried that I'm losing my touch! hehe I think I need to hurry and get back there so I can redeem myself!!! SERIOUSLY! This is NOT O.K.!

Anyway... about the photo... Sorry, I got a little off track there! On one of our fishing outings, Dad and I took our friends' boat out and enjoyed talking, picking on each other, and, of course, catching fish (although I caught none that day *hanging head in shame*). While we were out, these Canada Geese decided to fly overhead and inquire as to if we were catching anything.

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Sunset Company*

Yes, I'm posting my Looking at the Sky on Friday very, very early. This is because I'm still on vacation and don't have access to the internet, except on very rare occasion, like now when I came into the office to do some work.

Tuesday evening, Dad, Matouk, and I were sitting in Dad's back yard. We were just hanging out and talking about everything from fishing to lipozene. I glanced back at the reservoir and saw the colors of the sunset. So, Dad, Matouk, and I took a little walk so I could photograph the sunset over the reservoir. If you look closely, you'll see that, once again, I was joined by another critter who had come to watch the beauty. If you click on the photo to view it larger, you can see the critter on the right side of the photo.

Macro Monday *Red Spotted Purple Love*

These mating Red Spotted Purple (yes, that's the real name) butterflies flitted past me as I was walking through my yard on the way back from the pond. I was having random thoughts about about how many fish I'll catch in Ohio, acne face wash, and why you drive in a parkway but park in a driveway (Seriously! I'm that random!), but when I saw this pair, I began following them all around the yard, hoping they would land and allow me to get a photo (does that make me a butterfly voyeur?). Finally, they did briefly land and allowed me to get a couple photos.

Yes, I'm using the same post for both Macro Monday and Ruby Tuesday. Let me plead my case... First of all, the photo definitely fits both memes. It does!!! Second, I'm in Ohio so my internet time is limited. Are my excuses acceptable? Whew! I was worried!

Camera-Critters #118

As you view this post, I am hanging out with my daddy and probably being kissed by my brother the wolfdog (Matouk). Yes, I'm away... for EIGHT whole days!!! Hopefully this time won't be as bad as the last time when it was time to head home, and I had to walk into the airport and leave my daddy standing behind me. I almost couldn't do it. I was literally sick to my stomach (that's one way to avoid the need for lipozene LOL), and I wanted nothing more than to turn around and run back out of the airport and jump in Dad's truck and go back to spend more time with him... ummmm indefinitely. Yes, I'm 35 years old. Who cares? You can still be a daddy's girl at 35 years old!

This photo has some significance when it comes to me and Dad. When he was out here in Missouri with me, he heard a bird and commented that he had never heard that bird before then. My dad is the one who instilled the love of nature and animals in me, so it was significant that he had never heard this bird's call prior to then. We called it the "wind-up bird", because its call sounds like it has been wound up and let go. After he left, my buddy and I researched the internet to put a name to the "wind-up bird", and we discovered it was an Upland Sandpiper. So, three years later, I finally got a good photo of one. In fact, it was as if the bird was posing for me!!! I present to you...

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Breaking the Rules*

For this week's Looking at the Sky on Friday, I decided to post a photo which is against the rules. No, I won't get kicked out of LATSOF or the blogosphere for the photo; It's not THAT kind of breaking the rules. It breaks the photography rules - Don't shoot directly into the sun, sunspots are bad, etc., etc. However, I'm being a rebel, and I just don't care! I like the photo. It reminds me of peaceful moments back at my pond, while experiencing nature and letting my stresses go for just a bit - let go of the work worries, the worries about Hub's back, trying to find the best belly fat burner, worries about the weather and the farm... etc... etc...etc. Shot into the sun... sunspots or not... viewing this photo gives me a feeling of peace.

True Colours Thursday *Linen*

This week, for True Colours Thursday, the color theme is "Linen". I must admit that when I think of linen, I think of white linen fabric. However, I did some research, like I would for gmat prep, and I discovered that actually, the color "linen" is a yellowish-white. It's like an off-white. Well, I searched and searched my photos looking for the exact color of linen, but I didn't really find anything that perfectly fit. However, I did find the below photo, which I think has several variations of the color linen in it. Besides, I've really been wanting to post this photo, because I really like how it looks like the female Red-Winged Blackbird is offering a flower (Queen Anne's Lace also known as Wild Carrot) to the viewers of the photo.

ABC Wednesday *Y is for Yellow Flowers*

This week for ABC Wednesday, we are on the letter "Y". This one wasn't too hard, but next week is the letter "Z". I'm already wondering what the heck I'm going to do for next week, especially considering I've got to do all of next week's posts now and set them all to auto-post, because I'm heading home for my step-daughter's bridal shower and some much needed time with my daddy, Matouk the wolfdog, my family, and my friends!

Ruby Tuesday *Playful Cardinal*

You can't get much more appropriate for Ruby Tuesday than a beautiful red male Cardinal! This particular Cardinal was playing games with me though. I had taken a break at work and gone outside with my camera. I spotted this Cardinal in the tree singing to me. So, I took its photo. I would walk closer, and when I would lift the camera to my eye, the Cardinal would fly in a nearby bush and hid behind the leaves. So, I gave up and started to walk to the door to go inside. Then, the Cardinal flew out of the bush, landed in the tree again, and started singing to me again. So, I turned around and went back to take its photo. It then flew back in the bush. We played this game about four times, until I finally said, "O.K. I've GOT to get back inside and back to work!" It then sat and posed for me for several photos. I could just imagine it saying "Well, fine, if you're gonna be a party pooper!"

Macro Monday *Summer Azure*

I really enjoy participating in Macro Monday, because macro photography is one of my favorite types of photography. My photo for this week definitely fits in the 'macro' category in my opinion, because this Summer Azure butterfly, was smaller than a dime (It definitely doesn't need any diet supplements). It flitted around in front of me as if calling to me to take its photo. So, I whispered to it, "If you land, I'll take your picture." It then landed on some clover. I then whispered, "O.K., but now you've got to show me your pretty face." I smiled, because it then proceeded to crawl over the clover flower and peek at me. So, I obliged it and took its portrait.

Camera-Critters #117

Hot diggity, I finally did it!!!

Those of you who have known me through my blog for awhile know about the "big bird conspiracy". For those of you who don't know, to make a long story short, basically I've been trying to photograph the 'big birds' since I moved here and have been completely unsuccessful. These big birds would include hawks, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles and Egrets. There have even been some rather humorous stories involving my trying to photograph these birds, which have led me to the conclusion that the big birds of Missouri have a conspiracy against me. It was getting to the point where I was going to have to start using some anti wrinkle eye cream, because I was stressing myself out thinking I would NEVER get good photos of these birds.

Well, Wednesday evening... it happened. I'm just overjoyed. Now... where are those hawks?
