Looking at the Sky on Friday *My Addiction*

Yeah, so my picture involves my pond again... what can I say? I'm addicted to my pond! I just can't help it. That's where I go to chill out... to find dragonflies... to find reflections... to GO FISHING!!! Seriously, I can't help the addiction, and I don't WANT help with the addiction either! Just leave me and my addiction alone, O.K.??? Oh sorry, guess I got a little defensive there! Sorry bout that. Really (kinda).

But, seriously, is this not beautiful???
(c) Misty DawnS

Yes, I was fishing when I took this photo. Yes, I take my camera when I go fishing. Yes, I realize I have issues! Hey, a girl... err tomboy... needs to fish! It's therapeutic! Instead, I'd be sitting in front of a computer, every minute of my life, looking at websites such as No, that's not a bad thing, but a tomboy and nature lover needs to get away and go outside every now and then. Besides, I had a date... with some fishing worms. I'm not one to stand a date up... especially with nightcrawlers... just sayin'!

ABC Wednesday *K is for Kids... kinda*

Well, the letter "K" is our letter this week for the wonderfully challenging ABC Wednesday Meme. I've posted both of these photos on my blog before. However, I just couldn't resist posting them again, and, if I feel like it, I'll probably post them yet again some time in the future. It's my blog... I can do that. LOL

So, I present to you...

K is for Keep Up, Kids!
K is for Keep Movin', Kids!

Ruby Tuesday *Autumn Macro Again*

Yes, my Ruby Tuesday post for this week is similar to last week's Ruby Tuesday post. However, it is now officially fall. So, photographs of the leaves changing colors are rather appropriate, don't ya think? Besides, I liked how the sun was backlighting this leaf and highlighting the colors for me.

(c) Misty DawnS

I'm not looking forward to cold weather, and I'm certainly not looking forward to the snow, which comes after fall. However, I am really looking forward to getting some fall photographs. I hope I get lots of opportunities to go for some photo walks this fall.

Macro & Mellow Yellow Monday *Fluffy Flower*

I'm not sure what these wildflowers are. They remind me of dandelions with the yellow, and then the white seeds. However, from what I've observed, they aren't really 'flowers', because when they open, they open as the white fluffy seeds that you see. I'm sure someone can tell me what they are. However, even without knowing what the technical name is, I sure enjoy getting macro photographs of them. They are very photogenic. hehe

Today's Flowers *Bee & Beauty*

These wildflowers are growing... you guessed it... by my pond. Gee, do ya ever get the feeling I spend too much time at my pond? Nah, one can never spend too much time at a pond, right?

Anyway, I think these flowers are beautiful and delicate. So, I decided to photograph them and share them with you for Today's Flowers.

Aren't they pretty?
(c) Misty DawnS

As you can see, I'm not the only one who took time to enjoy these flowers...
(c) Misty DawnS

While I enjoyed these flowers for their beauty,
this critter was enjoying these flowers for a whole different reason.
Can you see its pollen sacks?

Macro Flowers *Sentimental*

Macro Flowers Saturday badge 1

This photograph is quite sentimental for me. I know, it sounds strange for a macro photograph of a flower to be sentimental, but after I explain, you'll understand... I think. You see, on May 13, 2009, I survived a terrifying experience when I was driving home from work and had to pull over and take shelter in a small convenience store during a tornado. I survived (obviously) although three people did not survive that tornado. After Hubs was able to pick me up (it took him several hours to get to me), because my vehicle was unable to be driven, he told me, as we pulled in the driveway, that my mother-in-law had brought me an early birthday present that day. How ironic this was, considering my birthday isn't until June! Yet, she knew that I had been wanting a Butterfly Bush. So, she got me one then so it would be flowering by my birthday. At the time, after what I had just been through, I thanked her on the phone and told her I was glad I survived to see it.

Hubs and I planted the Butterfly Bush, and the below photo is from July of 2009, when it was still in bloom. Believe it or not, it gets even more sentimental...

Because this year, 2010, I was not able to take photos of my beloved Butterfly Bush, because it didn't make it through the winter. It's probably strange to cry over a bush not making it through, because it happens all the time. However, this particular bush held a significance... a HUGE significance. As I cried, I proclaimed to Hubs that, eventually, I would have Butterfly Bushes of all different colors all over the place!!! I think Hubs realized that it wasn't just about the bush, because he simply shook his head and agreed.

No, I don't have another Butterfly Bush yet (or the several I swore I would get), but eventually... I will! I just have to. It's become an important issue for me now.

Camera-Critters #129

Well, I did it again. Or, I guess I should say Hubs did it again! A few days ago, Hubs came home, and mixed up a bottle of milk replacer for an orphaned calf he has been feeding twice a day. He also grabbed several bags of medicated feed we've been feeding our cows in an attempt to avoid a serious disease, which has decided to run rampant in the cows in our area. Trust me, you don't want to know the details. It has every farmer around here in a panic.

Anyway, after Hubs had grabbed all the necessary feed, he headed down the road to where we have the cattle right now. He had just pulled out of the driveway a minute ago when my phone rang. I instantly knew he must have found another photo opportunity for me. When I answered, he started describing the area... across from the water tower, there are some hay bales stacked (the same hay bales from my Looking at the Sky on Friday post)... "Yeah, I know the area!" I eagerly replied. He finished filling me in on the details, and I think I hung up on him before he was finished (sorry Hubs, but you know me, I had a camera to grab and walkin' to do!). I walked to the area Hubs described, with my camera in the on-position and ready, and this is what I found...

(c) Misty DawnS

It's a juvenile Great Horned Owl, in case you're wondering.
And, yes, the owl from last week was a Great Horned Owl also.
However, last week's owl was older, because its 'horns' were formed.
This fella (or gal, I didn't get close enough to get injured and find out) hasn't completely formed its 'horns' yet.

Just look at those eyes!!!
"Don't you DARE come a step closer Woman!"
Trust me, that's what it was saying, as it literally hissed at me.
I tried to explain to it that I was safe, but
it didn't trust that one big, clicking eye I had sticking out of my face.

(c) Misty DawnS

For me, it's such a high to see and photograph wild animals! I literally have to calm myself down afterwards with deep breathing so that I can quit shaking. It's kind of like opiate detox. LOL So, anyway, I photographed it, and then I left it alone so I wouldn't be stressing it out too much, and I called the Game Warden (yes, again). However, I won't go into the details of my phone conversation with the Game Warden. Let's just say I very sarcastically thanked him for doing his JOB (remember... sarcastic is the key word here), and I let him know I would gladly spread the word at how WELL HE DOES HIS JOB... yes, in that loud tone... right before I hung up on him. Nuff said.

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Bales & Clouds*

Once again, I've got round hay bales in my Looking at the Sky on Friday post. *sigh* You'll just have to forgive me, because this is a common sight around here. We are in a farming community, ya know. Some people love my farming landscapes, and some people don't care for them. I just photograph what is available to me to photograph. I photograph what I find interesting or beautiful, and this scene, with the hay bales with different colored netting, against the bright blue sky with the clouds looking like they go on forever... well, it was a beautiful and interesting scene to me. So, photograph it, I did. :-)

(c) Misty DawnS

Unbelievably, fall is here! This means that winter (ugh) is right around the corner. So, you won't be seeing many more photos like this from me! Instead, we'll be talking about snow, Christmas, shopping, and online gift cards! Where did the summer go?!?!

Outer Banks... Here We Come!

A couple weekends ago, one of my cousins got married. I, being several hundred miles away was unable to attend the wedding. It was hard on me, because my cousins are like siblings to me, and they were all there. Later, I learned that they all had discussed getting together and going somewhere nice around Thanksgiving-time.

They finally arrived at the idea that they would rent one of the Outer Banks vacation rentals. When I read of this plan, I immediately decided that I wanted to be a part of it. I can't imagine the fun... the laughs... the memories that would come as a result of something like this!

Then, one of my cousins mentioned a specific house that he found at Carolina Designs. He mentioned it, because it had a heated pool, which he knew all the cousins would be interested in, because we love to hang out at the pool swimming, laughing, and having a good time. Then, I found another house, which has so many opportunities for us to enjoy our time together, and it also has opportunities for me to enjoy some time as a photographer.

Really, the entire Outer Banks area has so much to offer to me as a photographer! It also has so much to offer to our family so that we may create some memories which will last lifetimes! Heck, the aunts and uncles are now in on this plan! I SO want to figure out a way that I can be a part of it too!!!

ABC Wednesday *J is for Judging*

This week we are at the letter "J" for the fun and challenging ABC Wednesday meme. I must admit, I struggled with this one. Then, while out on a photo walk, it hit me! Duh! I haven't said on my blog anything about the results of the JUDGING of the photo competition at the local fair. I realized that I talked about it on Facebook on my regular page and on my Facebook photography page, but I didn't post about it on my blog! What's wrong with me! Normally, I'd be jumping to get to the computer in a jiffy and post about the judging. Besides, I certainly have reason to jump for joy this year, because...

I got Best of Show!!!
(with my "Bobolink Brunch" photo. Do you see the bee?)
(c) Misty DawnS

I think part of why I didn't post about it yet, is because I don't like to feel like I'm bragging on myself. It makes me very self-conscious. Anyway, if you want to know... I got first place in the animal category (and also Best of Show) with the photo above. I also took second place in the animal category. I got first place and second place in the floral category. Also, I got second place in the landscape category.

Now, if I just knew what I was doing in order to get my name and my photography discovered.  My websites aren't doing too well. I think this is because of the state our economy is in. I guess I just need to be patient... sometimes, that's hard.

Ruby Tuesday *Autumn Macro*

Thursday of this week is the first day of autumn, as my office partner at work keeps reminding me. She LOVES fall, and she is very excited for its arrival. I, on the other hand, dread the snow and bad driving conditions which follow fall. So, I don't get excited about that coming near.

The other day, my office partner came back from lunch and was carrying two red leaves. As we talked, she put tape on the leaves and stuck them on her monitor. I asked, "Ummmm, did you just tape leaves to your monitor?" She replied, "Yes, it's my autumn is coming bouquet." I just laughed and said something about her having almost as many issues as I have. LOL

Clean Up After Your Pets

When it comes to nature and my dogs, I'm not sure which I love more! Seriously, how could I possibly choose? I just can't. They both are near and dear to my heart. I love spending time with my dogs, and I love being in nature. Therefore, when we are able to take the dogs camping with us or walking the trails of a park, I'm on top of the world!

However, as you know, doggies have to do their... ummmm... business, and they don't use the outhouse. I'm just sayin'. So, when in public places, it is respectful and important to clean up after your dogs. You can do this by carrying dog waste bags with you. You and your dogs are enjoying time outside together, and the people who come to the same place after you will be able to enjoy their time too.

One place I found to purchase these bags is a website called GABPProperty. They have some good deals, and, better yet, they sell biodegradable pet waste bags! How cool is that?!?! While you're enjoying nature with your pets, you can also be doing you part by not only cleaning up after them, but also helping take care of the environment at the same time.

At a lot of dog parks, it is required that you clean up your dog's 'business'. So, why not be conscious of the environment at the same time?

Security Worries

This weekend, I was informed that our neighbors' house was broken into. In addition to other things, there was quite a bit of money stolen. Normally, being out in the country, we don't have these worries cross our minds. However, now I keep thinking about what we need to do to safeguard our home, possessions, and sense of security. Of course you can lock the doors, but if someone really wants to get in, they will find a way.

Security cameras might be a bit overboard for where we live. However, when you hear of something like this happening, you can't help but be nervous and cautious! In fact, I was told that people already are nervous. For example, I went for a photo walk down the road this weekend. I guess someone saw me walking and went to one of the neighbor's houses and said that there was some little lady walking down the road and she had a big camera. The neighbor reassured the lady that I just take pictures, and I'm not a danger. Yes, it's kind of funny, but at the same time, it's concerning.

Possessions can be replaced. However, you can't take away the emotional effects of having your sense of safety being damaged. Heck, I already have people worried about me going for walks. They want me to carry a gun, and we're not talking stun guns here, or mace. This is mainly because they worry about what mean critter I might run into in the woods. It's pretty bad that now our quiet, country community has to worry about someone entering their homes!

Mellow Yellow Monday *Cloud of Clouded Sulphurs*

When I go down the road on a photo walk, there are always large groups of Clouded Sulphur butterflies at the end of the gravel road where it meets the blacktop road. It's always fun when I turn to walk down the gravel, because all the butterflies start flying and flittering around me. It's like being in a fairytale, where I'm at a magical place where the butterlies flutter around me. Yes, I know I'm weird.

Anyway, if you click on the photo to view it larger, you will see that there is also another species of butterflies up near the top of the photo. Those are Pearl Crescent butterflies. See, it's a butterfly fairlyland where everyone gets along. ;-) Ahhh yes, a fairytale where everyone gets along, everyone is beautiful (no need for face moisturizers), there is no hate, nature is always respected... ahhh Huh? Oh, sorry, I was lost in a fairytale. hehe

Macro Monday *Red Spotted Purple 3D*

I realize I've already posted an image of this Red Spotted Purple butterfly last week for this meme, but I just can't help myself. I'm posting another photo of this gorgeous butterfly, because I love several of the photos I was able to get of it. I like this photo, because I think it has a 3D effect to it. I also love the bokeh that the purple and yellow wildflowers provide. O.K., I promise that next week I won't post another photo of this butterfly... even though, I have about three more images of it that I really like. ;-)

Macro Flowers *Make a Wish*

Macro Flowers Saturday badge 1

Hey look! I found a new meme! It's call Macro Flowers Saturday. Yes, I realize it is Sunday, but I just found the meme, so I'm going to post late. I'll try to be on time for future weeks.

So, now I have two flower memes to participate in... just as summer is ending and my flowers are all going to go away. That's O.K.! I'll just go in my photo archives and find flowers to post. It will be a nice pick-me-up on those cold and yucky winter days!

For my first participation in the Macro Flowers meme, I thought it would be appropriate to post one of my favorite macro photography subjects...

the Dandelion which has gone to seed.

Make a Wish!
(c) Misty DawnS

It has been raining and storming all morning... all last night too. So, I guess there won't be any photo walks for me today! I'll just use this time to work on some photos for my websites, and maybe I'll create some things like calendars and baby shower invitations on my Zazzle site too.

Today's Flowers *Plentiful Sunshine*

As you can tell, these yellow wildflowers are plentiful around my pond, fence rows, and fields right now. The bright yellow always reminds me of sunshine. So, I thought it was appropriate to get a photo of these flowers being bathed in sunlight. Besides, all too soon, the beautiful wildflowers (and the warm and sunny days) will be gone for the year. Just like Diet pills with amphetamine get rid of acne, Mr. Winter gets rid of my beautiful wildflowers. So sad... so very, very sad.

SOOC Sunday *Damselfly*

It has been a while since I've participated in Straight Out of the Camera Sunday. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because when I look at my photos, I think that I need to do something to them to improve them. Therefore, I don't use them for this meme. I don't do much post processing to my photos (partly because I don't know how to use Photoshop on my images), but I do always think I need to click here to sharpen the image or click there to adjust the brightness and contrast. Speaking of Photoshop... I just got some books on the software, and that is my project for when the weather gets cold. I'm going to try to teach myself (with the help of Scott Kelby) Photoshop! Wish me luck!

Camera-Critters #128

I've been waiting to post these photos for what seems like forever! I got these photos on a Saturday, so my Camera-Critters for that week had already been posted. THEN... I had promised everyone that a photo of the bat, who hangs out at work, would be coming. So, I needed to post the bat last week. FINALLY, I get to post these photos!!! I've had to use a LOT of patience waiting to post these, and, trust me, when it comes to sharing photos that I like, I'm not a very patient girl! LOL

Hubs had gone to check cattle, and I was getting ready to go for a walk, when I heard Hub's truck coming down the road, and he was beeping the horn. I know what that means. It means grab your camera and get ready to jump in the truck cuz I've found something for you to photograph. I was at the driveway, with my camera around my neck, before he even pulled in. LOL He smiled big, and we headed down the road. I kept asking what I was going to photograph, but he kept saying, "You'll see." Then, he turned onto a gravel road, and I saw this...

(c) Misty DawnS

I was jumping out of the truck, before Hubs could even get it stopped. This Great Horned Owl was injured with a broken wing. So, after photographing it, we got ahold of the game warden. After calling the game warden, I decided to go for a walk. My cell phone rang, and it was the game warden. He was looking for the owl, but couldn't find it. So, I told him to drive down the road and pick me up, and I would help him find it. So, I climbed in a truck with the game warden, his pregnant wife, and their two children, and we went to find the owl. We found it, and the game warden took it to a rehab. Don't ya just love happen endings?

(c) Misty DawnS

Let me tell ya, it was quite the fiasco trying to get ahold of the game warden. We looked in the phone book with no success. Then, we called Hub's aunt to ask her where to call. She drove over to the ex-game warden's house and asked him. She was told we had to call the Sheriff's Office, and they would contact the game warden, and the game warden would then call us back! Geesh, talk about needed to use a directory submission service! How would you get ahold of him if there were an emergency?!?! Anyway, I now have his phone number in my phone... just in case I find more critters who need rescued. ;-)

Looking at the Sky on Friday *While Looking at the Ground Too*

Hello everyone! Happy Friday (or Thursday night, if you're reading this early). Yes, I may seem in an overly good mood. That would be because I took the day off work tomorrow! Yeppers, I've had a lot of stress lately (enough stress to cause me to lose weight really fast, which I certainly don't need to do), and I decided that a "Misty Dawn Day" was in serious order. So, Happy Friday (or Thursday night hehe).

I must admit, when I took this photo, I wasn't sure if I was looking at the sky or looking at the ground. The sky was a beautiful blue with a layer of white clouds. Yet, on the ground, along the fence, was a line of different colored wildflowers. After some thought, I finally decided I'd look at both, and I'd capture both in a photograph. :-)

ABC Wednesday *I is for Insect*

This week, for the ABC Wednesday meme, we are at the letter "i". Considering I'm a well known bug addict, this one was easy for me. Although the vowels are usually difficult, this particular vowel was not difficult for me! This is another of my "work critter friends". Yes, I seem to have several photos from work lately. This is because I have many friends at work who come to report to me that there is a critter or some flowers I should go photograph. It's also because some days I just need to step away from the desk for a bit, and the best thing for me to do is grab the camera and go see what I can capture.

So, I present to you...

"I" is for "Insect" (shocking coming from me, eh?)
(More specifically a Praying Mantis who made our helipad its home)
I just love the shadow and how it shows the insect 'praying'.

Macro & Mellow Yellow Monday *Red Spotted Purple Beauty*

While back at my pond last weekend, I spotted one of my favorite butterflies (yes, I realize that I call ALL the butterflies my favorite butterflies... how could you possibly choose among beautiful butterflies???). This is a Red Spotted Purple butterfly. Yes, that's its real name; I didn't make it up, although I am known to make up my own names for the critters I see.

(I recommend clicking on the photo to view it larger.)
(c) Misty DawnS

The weather is finally working in my favor, and I'm able to get outside to take pictures. The entire summer, it was either too hot for comfort, or it was raining. I'm actually glad for fall this year! Now, I can get outside and get photos! That's what nature photographers do - they don't sit around on their modern sofas; They get out there to see what beauty nature is going to provide them to capture.

Camera-Critters #127

Some people may find the following critter in the following photo "scary" or "creepy" or "ugly". I disagree. I find the following critter in the following photo "totally cool" and "really cute". O.K., I'm sure many of you will disagree with me, but I've already accepted that I'm different from most people. I guess I'd agree with you that the critter wouldn't be on the list of the top
21st birthday gift ideas for her, but it's still cute, when you open your mind and really give it a chance! Honest!!!

And, no, I haven't gone batty on ya.
Well... maybe I have... just a little, bitty batty...
(c) Misty DawnS

This bat, and sometimes more, hang out where I work. They mind their own business and just 'hang around' on the building by the helipad... they don't bother anyone. So, no one should bother them... except for a critter-addicted girl who is addicted to her camera, of course!

Looking at the Sky on Friday *Head in the Clouds*

This has been a looooong week. Yes, I realize that we didn't work on Monday, so it should seem like a short week, but it certainly doesn't. All of the classes for which I'm in charge of arranging financial aid have started, textbooks have been bought, and financial aid has been scheduled to disburse, and I'm whipped! We get three floating holidays to use whenever we want, and if we don't use them, we lose them on our anniversary date. I've got one left, and I'm seriously thinking of using it soon to give myself another three day weekend, since this previous three day weekend was a bust for me. I'll spare you all the details, but it involved 5 hours of trying to pull a calf from a cow who was having trouble and my injuring my back again and being laid up for half the 'long' weekend. *sigh* So, I'm thinking another three day weekend is in order for me... a weekend which will involve lots of fishing and nature walks. Don't ya think?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy my entry for this week...
