Leaf Surfing ~ Camera-Critters #203

When I look at this photo of this grasshopper, I can help but start humming The Beach Boys song "Surfin Safari". To me, it looks like he is surfing, and the leaf is his surf board. Yes, I've admitted long ago that I have some issues. ;-)

Frozen Patterns

These aren't macros in the true definition of the term "macro photography". However, they are close-ups, and, therefore, they count.

With the amazing, and very strange (if I do say so myself), weather we've had this winter, you really don't know what you're gonna get from one day to the next. One day, our pond will have a thin layer of ice; The next day, the ice will be gone, and thoughts of fishing fill my brain (yeah, yeah thoughts of fishing always fill my brain - what's your point?); And, yet the next day, there will be areas of thick ice and other areas are clear.

Last weekend, I went back to the pond with the camera... more for exercise than anything else really. However, I think I came away with some pretty neat abstracts. What do you think?

We've had an amazing winter as far as the weather is concerned. I still, however, look forward to short sleeves, long walks, and, yes, fishing. Almost sounds like a romance novel, doesn't it? hehe

One Good Dog by Susan Wilson ~ A Book Review

I just finished reading the book One Good Dog by Susan Wilson. I read the book in about three days, which basically translates as "I couldn't stop reading it", but I tend to get like that when a dog is involved.

This is the story of a man, who thinks he has everything, subsequently thinks he loses everything, and then realizes he never had what really mattered in the first place. In other words, there's more to life than money (Honest, there is!).

Then, there's the dog, who also narrates the story. A Pit Bull (don't gasp). Y'all know I'm a sucker for any dog... especially one who can narrate a book! Besides this dog immediately won me over (shocking, I know).

To be honest, this book tells the story you would expect. Man gives up and loses hope; Man and dog find each other; Dog makes man realize there is more to life. Yes, it's what you'd expect, but that's why you pick and read (or download, in my case) a book like this... because you are wanting that story.

Susan Wilson does not disappoint with that story. She obviously has experience with dogs, and I loved how she shared the narration of the book with the dog. I always picture the events while I'm reading a book, and it was enjoyable to find myself picturing it from a dog's perspective.

One Good Dog was a quick read, because I HAD to know how things turned out for everyone. There were some turns I didn't expect, and some I did, and I enjoyed each and every one.

I'll certainly be looking for more books by Susan Wilson.

*** There is no disclaimer, because I did not receive this book for free. I paid for and downloaded the book. I am providing you with this review, because I enjoyed the book and think you would too. If you read it, let me know what you think!***

P.S. On a side note - I can totally see this as a movie, and I totally see Tom Hanks sitting on that bench with the dog. Seriously... don't you see Tom Hanks sitting there? O.K., maybe I'm having Forrest Gump flashbacks.

Saturday 9 The Third Time

Saturday 9: I Second That Emotion

1. Do you ever solicit advice on your love life? No. We've been married 10 years. Friends and I may talk about our lives, but I don't necessarily ask for advice.

2. What was the last thing you argued with someone about? I generally keep things in and don't argue (hence the ulcers).

3. Who do you hate right now? The Mucus Family (you've seen 'em on commercials), who have taken residence in my face and head. They are currently hanging photos on my cheekbones and setting a fire in their fireplace, which happens to be my nasal cavities.

4. Who do you love right now? Oh gosh - lots of people (even Hubs, who gave me this cold) ... and dogs.

5. Where do you want to be in 6 years? By a body of water, with my fishing pole and camera, and the dogs nearby (oh wait - that's where I want to be next year... heck, that's where I want to be next week!)

6. What is your craziest vice? I wasn't sure, so while in conversation with the dogs, I asked them, and they said I have no vices, and I'm certainly not crazy. So, there ya have it. My dogs know everything; They're Border Collies.

7. How did you celebrate Valentines Day? It was Tuesday. I went to work. Hubs got me my favorite sandwich from Subway (Februany, Februany...) Doesn't it just bring a tear to your eye?

8. What is your most unique or fondest memory of a special Valentine's Day? My grandparents raised me, and Valentine's Day was Grandpa's birthday. So, spending Grandpa's birthday with him would be the best memories of Valentine's Day.

9. Were you in the same location five years ago that you are today? Would you have expected to be? Oh not even close... five years ago, we were preparing a move to a whole new state and a whole new life.

The Three Amigos Take Two ~ Camera-Critters #202

If you've been around my blog much, you know about my most known photo of "The Three Amigos", which features three young raccoon siblings in the nook of a tree. Well, a few months ago, one of my very best friends (hi Bear) sent me a photo of "The Three Amigos", which I had sent to him to work on with post processing after my encounter with the famous raccoon family. I had forgotten all about this photo of them, but I was thrilled to see it and remember my time I spent watching and photographing them.

Since I haven't had a chance to photograph many critters lately, I thought I'd share this photo with you.

I think these guys deserved some sports trophies for their climbing abilities! They were SO much fun to watch and photograph. I will never forget this experience... especially considering they provided me with my most known photograph of all time.

Saturday 9 Take Two

Saturday 9: Indian Reservation

1. Do you enjoy going to a casino now and again? Never been to one. So, there hasn't been a "now", and there won't be an "again", until after there's been a "now". Yes, I am making complete sense.

2. What makes you happy most of the time? Photography (always), my dogs, fishing (a bad day fishing is still better than any other day... just sayin')

3. Are you jealous of someone right now? Well, I've been told it's a sin to be jealous. But, alas, I find myself jealous of those who have found their "big break". Then I remind myself that they probably are jealous of others for reasons I don't know.

4. You're stranded on a desert island with one fictional character. Who is it? Why? Oh my... being a big fan of fiction, I don't think I could pick just one! May I just have a fictional party and invite all my fictional people, including those I'm jealous of?????

5. Have you ever been in the emergency room? If yes, for what (most recently)? I don't even wanna type about it, as I believe it will be a jinx... someone very important in my life is accident prone.

6. Where is the last place you drove to just for fun? For fun? Seriously? I don't drive for fun. I drive 45 minutes to and from work every day... my idea of fun is not driving. I do, however, like to be in the passenger seat with my camera around my neck, while out on a photo-drive with someone else doing the driving (and me jumping out of the vehicle when I see something cool)!

7. If you were to make your living as a photographer, what would love to shoot? Duh... just scroll through my blog a bit... NATURE. 'nuff said.

8. Tell us about a band you like that we might not have heard. The Steve Cipriano Band (we hired them to perform at our wedding reception)

9. Where was the last place you went shopping? Why? I am not your typical female... I don't like to shop. *gasp* So, I'd say e-bay. :-) I like to avoid the crowds and shop online.

A Heart Takes Flight ~ Camera-Critters #201

Pay attention, because this is a TEST!

Look closely...

Look very closely...

Can you tell me why I chose this photo for

the Camera-Critters post before

Valentine's Day???

(c) Misty DawnS

You didn't cheat by reading the title or tags, did you???
C'mon be honest now. ;-)

If you need another clue to really give it away,
I've also added this photo to Guest Heart Thursday.
Can you tell why?

Do you have something special planned for someone special in your life on Valentine's Day? In my opinion, you don't have to spend a lot of money to show someone you care. A lot of times, it's the low cost energy gifts that really touch the heart and mean the most... like a handwritten note, breakfast in bed, picked flowers. That's just my opinion though. What's your idea of the best Valentine's Day gift?

Gorgeous Canvas Prints

Awhile back, I was offered the opportunity to receive a free 11x14 canvas print of one of my photos for review. Of course, I wanted to do the review! What a wonderful opportunity for a photo-blogger!

It took me to make a decision on which photo to have turned into a canvas print. At first, I thought I'd pick something to hang in our newly remodeled living room. Then, however, I had a much better idea...

When my aunt passed away from pancreatic cancer, I dedicated a photo to her on my Flickr account. Her sister, my aunt who raised me, holds that photo dear to her heart. So, I decided to have that photo put on canvas to send to her.

I ordered the canvas, and when it arrived, I was blown away! It's absolutely gorgeous and very high quality. Just look...

I chose to have the photo wrap around the edges.
Isn't it awesome?!?!

(c) Misty DawnS

I couldn't be more excited.
I'm sure my aunt is going to love it.

(c) Misty DawnS

Seriously, if you're an artist or a photographer, you will want to use Easy Canvas Prints. Their quality and attention to detail are a great way to show off your work. They make great gifts too! Right now, they are offering 25% OFF ALL CANVAS ORDERS and FREE standard shipping (psst... Valentine's Day is just around the corner... just sayin') Just click on the link in this post, or the link in my sidebar, and make your first order... I'll bet you become a repeat customer. I'm already planning on my next order!

First Time with Saturday 9

Today, I was in the mood to do a meme. So, I went to The Daily Meme site to find a Saturday Meme, and I found Saturday 9. It looks like fun, so here's my Saturday 9 answers!

Saturday 9: Our House

1. I read that Bud Weiser & Kathy moved into their new house! When was the last time you moved? Where to?

Five minutes ago, I moved to the bathroom/laundry room to move the comforter from the washer to the dryer, and then I moved to the coffee pot to get a refill, and then I moved back to the couch to be lazy.
(On June 1, 2007, I joined Hubs (he came out a day earlier) at our current residence in Missouri. We've come a LONG way, and I think we're here to stay.)

2. If they were making a Hall of Fame for the blogosphere, name a blogger or two who you think should make the list. Why?

Everyone on my blogroll, of course :-) Cuz they're my freeeeeeeends, and I obviously enjoy their blogs. Otherwise, they wouldn't be on my blogroll, right?

3. What are couple of funny things you remember your parents saying? (Like, “They're starving there in China, so finish what you've got.” - John Lennon) Do you say them to your kids?

Don't sit too close to the TV, because you'll hurt your eyes.
(So, now I just stare at a computer screen for over 8 hours a day.)

4. What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?

There are miracles around us every day. We just need to open ourselves up to notice them.

5. What is it too late for?

To have kids. Oh, and that bag of lettuce I didn't know was in the fridge (waaaaaay wilted and slimy).

6. What do you try to stay away from?

Wilted and slimy lettuce

7. When you get into a disagreement or fight, how often are you the first to apologize?

ALWAYS. I even apologize for things that have absolutely nothing to do with me. My friend Barb and I joke, "If a species of ant becomes extinct in Africa, Misty will blame herself for it."

8. Tell us about a current issue that you’re unhappy with.

Pull up a seat, and we'll talk about loss of jobs, war, and abuse... nah, that's depressing.

9. How often do you update your blog/site and why?

At least once a week for Camera-Critters (since I'm the host of Camera-Critters, I probably should participate LOL). I do try to update it more often, but life gets hectic, and I get tired.

A Bird Giving Me THE Bird ~ Camera-Critters #200

While out on a walk, I saw some hawks and other birds circling overhead. I always find it challenging and fun to see how much clarity and quality I can capture in a photograph of a bird which is flying in the Heavens WAY above my head.

I probably have at least fifty similar photos. So you would think that I'd be satisfied with that, right? No... each time I'm on a walk, and hear that scream of the bird gliding above me, I just can't resist pointing the camera to the sky.

Half the time, I don't even crop these photos and really look at them. This time, however, I did, and, I couldn't help but wonder...

Wait a minute!
Is that bird...
giving me the bird?!?!

(c) Misty DawnS

Maybe this is what the birds think when we make cd replication of their nature-given, talented voices. hehe Just a thought.
