Canine Pancreatitis

What is Canine Pancreatitis?

Seemingly healthy and robust dogs can quickly fall ill with pancreatitis, and this is especially common in dogs whose immune systems are compromised. As with humans, in dogs the pancreas serves to create essential hormones and enzymes. If the pancreas becomes inflamed from infection, injury, or even certain toxins that can come from ingested garbage, it's important to seek medical attention right away. Pancreatitis not only causes inflammation, but it causes the pancreas to begin digesting itself, which can quickly become fatal.

In dogs, pancreatitis typically presents with vomiting and diarrhea, fever, a hunched posture, as well as anorexia and fatigue due to the pain and suffering caused by the inflamed pancreas. Additionally, an acute attack of pancreatitis can lead to inflammation of nearby arteries and veins, and even trigger renal failure.

Unfortunately there is no specific treatment for canine pancreatitis, though supportive treatment in the form of antibiotics for any present infections, as well as fluids and pain medication, can go a long way in helping the dog to hopefully recover. Fluids and pain medication are especially important components for treating pancreatitis in dogs, as dehydration and fatigue from pain can both be fatal to dogs with distressed pancreases.

Planning a Comeback

I do have every intention on coming back to blogging.  A few things have caused me to take a short break...

1.  A long, cold, never-ending winter
2.  Some big events at my day job, which have required my attention and caused some stress and exhaustion
3.  The most important reason...

Since I had to return to work full time (and then do my second job when I get home), there's nothing more important than spending every minute of the rest of my 'at-home' time with this sweetheart!  Seriously... I find myself wondering how life ever had meaning before her. ;-)

When I do return to blogging, I will, of course, still be posting nature photography.  But, as you probably guessed, my blog will take on another angle too, since I'm now a mommy.  There will be posts about my precious miracle girl, mommy reviews, and thoughts on being 'older parents'.

But, don't worry - there will still be LOTS of nature photography, as I can't wait to share my love of nature with my girl. :-)
