1. Do you enjoy going to a casino now and again? Never been to one. So, there hasn't been a "now", and there won't be an "again", until after there's been a "now". Yes, I am making complete sense.

2. What makes you happy most of the time? Photography (always), my dogs, fishing (a bad day fishing is still better than any other day... just sayin')

3. Are you jealous of someone right now? Well, I've been told it's a sin to be jealous. But, alas, I find myself jealous of those who have found their "big break". Then I remind myself that they probably are jealous of others for reasons I don't know.

4. You're stranded on a desert island with one fictional character. Who is it? Why? Oh my... being a big fan of fiction, I don't think I could pick just one! May I just have a fictional party and invite all my fictional people, including those I'm jealous of?????

5. Have you ever been in the emergency room? If yes, for what (most recently)? I don't even wanna type about it, as I believe it will be a jinx... someone very important in my life is accident prone.

6. Where is the last place you drove to just for fun? For fun? Seriously? I don't drive for fun. I drive 45 minutes to and from work every day... my idea of fun is not driving. I do, however, like to be in the passenger seat with my camera around my neck, while out on a photo-drive with someone else doing the driving (and me jumping out of the vehicle when I see something cool)!

7. If you were to make your living as a photographer, what would love to shoot? Duh... just scroll through my blog a bit... NATURE. 'nuff said.

8. Tell us about a band you like that we might not have heard. The Steve Cipriano Band (we hired them to perform at our wedding reception)

9. Where was the last place you went shopping? Why? I am not your typical female... I don't like to shop. *gasp* So, I'd say e-bay. :-) I like to avoid the crowds and shop online.

Awhile back, I was offered the opportunity to receive a free 11x14 canvas print of one of my photos for review. Of course, I wanted to do the review! What a wonderful opportunity for a photo-blogger!

Today, I was in the mood to do a meme. So, I went to The Daily Meme site to find a Saturday Meme, and I found Saturday 9. It looks like fun, so here's my Saturday 9 answers!

Saturday 9: Our House

1. I read that Bud Weiser & Kathy moved into their new house! When was the last time you moved? Where to?

Five minutes ago, I moved to the bathroom/laundry room to move the comforter from the washer to the dryer, and then I moved to the coffee pot to get a refill, and then I moved back to the couch to be lazy.

(On June 1, 2007, I joined Hubs (he came out a day earlier) at our current residence in Missouri. We've come a LONG way, and I think we're here to stay.)

2. If they were making a Hall of Fame for the blogosphere, name a blogger or two who you think should make the list. Why?

Everyone on my blogroll, of course :-) Cuz they're my freeeeeeeends, and I obviously enjoy their blogs. Otherwise, they wouldn't be on my blogroll, right?

3. What are couple of funny things you remember your parents saying? (Like, “They're starving there in China, so finish what you've got.” - John Lennon) Do you say them to your kids?

Don't sit too close to the TV, because you'll hurt your eyes.

(So, now I just stare at a computer screen for over 8 hours a day.)

4. What is something that has happened to you that you would consider a miracle?

There are miracles around us every day. We just need to open ourselves up to notice them.

5. What is it too late for?

To have kids. Oh, and that bag of lettuce I didn't know was in the fridge (waaaaaay wilted and slimy).

6. What do you try to stay away from?

Wilted and slimy lettuce

7. When you get into a disagreement or fight, how often are you the first to apologize?

ALWAYS. I even apologize for things that have absolutely nothing to do with me. My friend Barb and I joke, "If a species of ant becomes extinct in Africa, Misty will blame herself for it."

8. Tell us about a current issue that you’re unhappy with.

Pull up a seat, and we'll talk about loss of jobs, war, and abuse... nah, that's depressing.

9. How often do you update your blog/site and why?

At least once a week for Camera-Critters (since I'm the host of Camera-Critters, I probably should participate LOL). I do try to update it more often, but life gets hectic, and I get tired.

A Bird Giving Me THE Bird ~ Camera-Critters #200

So...

While out on a walk, I saw some hawks and other birds circling overhead. I always find it challenging and fun to see how much clarity and quality I can capture in a photograph of a bird which is flying in the Heavens WAY above my head.

I probably have at least fifty similar photos. So you would think that I'd be satisfied with that, right? No... each time I'm on a walk, and hear that scream of the bird gliding above me, I just can't resist pointing the camera to the sky.

Half the time, I don't even crop these photos and really look at them. This time, however, I did, and, I couldn't help but wonder...

Wait a minute!

Maybe this is what the birds think when we make cd replication of their nature-given, talented voices. hehe Just a thought.

Silver Linings for Sunday Skies

A couple weekends ago, I went out for a walk and was captivated by the clouds in the sky. Each time I raised my eyes to the sky, I saw something beautiful and worthy of a photograph. I think of the old saying "Each cloud has a silver lining." Well, on January 16, 2012, there were silver bullion bars filling the sky. Oh how rich I felt to have the opportunity to witness such beauty.

Sparrows & Snow ~ Camera-Critters #199

You seemed to like my photo of the American Tree Sparrow in last week's Camera-Critters. So, I thought I'd share another photo of a sweet little Tree Sparrow, who was hanging out by the pond.

I've got another update for any of you who actually enjoy my constant wonder at the strange weather we've had all winter. Thursday, we got up to 51 degrees. Hubs had stayed home from work to work cattle that day, and he said the weather was awesome. Yesterday, while at work, Hubs called and told me that I may want to start heading home. I asked why, and he said it was snowing and starting to stick on the roads. So, even though there was absolutely no snow at work, I headed home. Boy, was I glad I did! All of a sudden I found the snow and was glad I was driving in it then, rather than later when it was worse on the roads. Now, it looks like a winter wonderland outside. You know how when there's a fairly big snow, if you stand outside, you can hear every little noise? Well, so does Maggie May, who is currently out there barking at every noise she hears. She's giving me a Houston migraine (that's a migraine the size of Houston, for those of you who don't know).

Anyway... That's my weather update for the week. Back to our regularly scheduled program...

Winter is here. Mother Nature has been teasing us a bit with above-normal temperatures for this time of year. Those above-normal temperatures spoiled us and cause the 'normal' temperatures, which we have now, to seem extra cold.

It's All A Blur

I was getting ready to delete this image, as it is obviously ummmm... how would you say it? BLURRY!!! Yeah, that's a bit obvious; You didn't need me to tell you that, did you?

However, just as I was beginning to hit the delete key, something stopped me. Yes, it's obviously a photo that deserves to go to the trash bin... but... I dunno... something stopped me, and I kept it. Why? I dunno. But, I kept it.

So, this is what happens when

you quickly try to pan an owl,

well, you get just a big ol' mess of an image.

I guess I did capture motion, eh?

On another note, I'm considering purchasing a flowering plant, so I'll have something to photograph during the months when I'm stuck inside. However, I don't really have a green thumb. So, what are your suggestions? Does anyone have any experience with orchid plants? I think Orchids are very unique and beautiful, and I'm wondering if someone who doesn't have the best of luck with plants would be able to make an Orchid thrive? Yes, I'm good with bugs, wildflowers, and wildlife, but lacking in the indoor plants department!

Ice Swimming ~ Camera-Critters #198

We've had an amazing and unique winter this year. I think in the past three weeks we probably broke the records for high temperatures at least three times.

In fact, on Monday, we got up to 66 degrees in our part of Missouri! No, that is NOT a typo!!! The next day, however, the high was 26. Yeah, a 40-degree difference is a bit much.

Anyway, when it was in the 60s on Monday, I, of course, couldn't pass up the opportunity to take a couple walks. Obviously, you won't be getting any hockey trophies on our pond yet, as the ice isn't stable. There is, however, some ice formed. This first photo is of some activity under the ice.

2011 In Review ~ Camera-Critters #195

It's that time again... time for one year to come to a close and another to bring a new beginning... new possibilities... new opportunities... new ideas... new memories... new CRITTERS!

Each year, I try to do a recap of my favorite critter photos, and the past few years, I noticed that there were months (aka winter) wherein I didn't take any critter photos. This year, however, I have critters from each month. Some of the months, it was just impossible for me to choose just one critter photo... so bear with me. :-)

January

I remember this photograph, because

it was taken when I had forced myself to

pick up the camera and go outside to fight the

withdrawals and depression of not taking any photos.

February

One of the "Hubs found something for me to photograph" moments!

And, what a great moment it was!

This is one of my favorite photos from the whole year!

March

I'm always delighted to see a flock of ducks visiting our pond!

April

We were blessed with some gorgeous weather in April,

and I actually got to go fishing! In April!

I observed these two love birds... I mean Meadowlarks

during my fishing trip at the pond.

May

I got my Hoya close-up filters in May, and

took a day off work to play!

While photographing dew drops,

I got a photo which was on my Life List.

A coyote in the wild!

(O.K. so my pasture doesn't seem so wild, but still!)

I have a blast with my macro filters.

Another first for me - a Slender Baskettail dragonfly.

2011 also brought the

13-year Cicadas to us!

How cool to see something that only comes around

every 13 years!

During a windstorm, this little critter

was blown out of its nest and

proceeded to hop right up on my toes

and follow me around.

August brought more macro fun with

this Praying Mantis who was so considerate

to pose for many portraits.

They just radiate personality!

Somehow... for some reason... I tend to find critters to photograph at work!

This Polythemus Moth was not only hanging out on the window

waiting for me to photograph it - it was also another Lifer for me!

I just had to include another fishing acquaintance critter.

This doe had a young un' nearby and wanted to make sure

I didn't leave my fishing pole to get too close to her baby.

Have I mentioned that 2011 brought me many

Well, let me say it again!

This male Yellow-Legged Meadowhawk dragonfly

was yet another of my Life List critters!

Oh, how I love my dragonflies, and

oh how I love my close-up macro filters!

"Courage" is my word of the year for 2012, and

I decided to start working toward that word early,

when I got up-close and personal with one of my fears...

a wasp!

October

It's a Yellow Rumped Warbler, but

I like to call it a "Butter-Butt".

Bet ya can tell why!

October also brought me another beautiful bird.

A Harris Sparrow.

We were blessed in October to have my step-daughter

and her husband come for a too-short visit.

Hubs bonded with his grand-doggy Pug.

November

Hubs has been working on many projects during 2011.

One of those projects was moving an entire garage from one part

of our property to another.

Apparently, he had an audience.

December

I close this re-cap with a photo of the critters

who are the reason Hubs and I work so hard and

the reason I am here to experience and meet

Mother Nature's critters of the rural Midwest.

New Moon For A New Year

I truly hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. Hubs and I both have colds and have been sick for a week. I had so many things planned to get done during my winter break from work, and I've gotten absolutely nothing done, except sitting around feeling miserable. That'll teach me! Next time, I should plan on getting nothing done, and then maybe I'll accomplish a lot.

Since Hubs was so sweet and kind to bring this illness into our home, I've teased him that next time I have an extended break from work, I'm getting a hotel room or going to the airpot, errr I mean airport and heading to my dad's! Then my daddy can make me hot chocolate, and I can get lots of wolfdog-lovin!

So, it's that time of year again... time for you to tell me what your new year's resolutions or goals are. Mine are all photography related, of course. The main one though is to change and arrange my schedule so that I have more time (and energy) to work towards the goals I've set for myself... and to have more energy to enjoy the things in my life more.

As you can see by the photo below, it doesn't really look like December around here. Well, we don't have snow on the ground anyway. I'm O.K. with that, because I really dislike trying to drive to work in winter weather.

However, I'm on winter break now (can I get a "Woot!" and a "WooHoo!"?). So... Let it snow, let it snow... Let. It. Snow! Seriously... I want to attempt some snowflake macros. ;-)

Frosty Fun

This time of year, I tend to hibernate. Therefore, my poor camera gets neglected. I'm not a fan of the cold, my bugs have gone for the year, and I just don't get inspired like I do during the other seasons.

This year, however, I've got macro filters. This year, I hope to accomplish my first ever macro of a snowflake. This year, I hope to get inspired during the winter, rather than wish it away.

So, this morning, when there was some lingering frost and sunshine caressing said frost, the camera and I once again joined forces. I quickly realized that, I've got a lot to learn about photographing this time of year.

I will, however, practice,

and I will

learn.

If you read my last post, which shows my over-excessive excitement about insect ornaments, and then you see the photo in this post... you'll quickly figure out that I've reached that point of the year when I'm missing my bugs. Yes, I realize I'm quite the different individual, cuz most people don't miss bugs... but, hey, they're my favorite photography subjects!

Seriously, look at this critter. People would LOVE to have an outfit like this critter wears!

Don't worry, you'll only have to put up with my whining about missing bugs for another several months. That's all. ;-)

Dragonflies at Christmas

The below photographs were taken by my awesome office-partner, who happens to be an outstanding people photographer. She photographs her kids... I photograph bugs... we compliment each other perfectly.

Each year, we decorate our office. It's a group effort, as my secretary supplies the tree, my office-partner brings in some decorations, and other co-workers provide things too.

This year, my office-partner is heading to warm and sunny Florida to celebrate Christmas at her sister's with the rest of her family. They won't be needing any rv towing, but they will be driving. It will be a long trip, but I'm sure it will be totally worth it!

So, she grabbed a box of ornaments she wasn't using and LOOK what was in there box!!!

OK, yes, I realize you can see them and

I get a warm heart every time I look at our little tree.

Why yes, that is Joe Cool a.k.a. Snoopy under our tree. I won him at a seminar at work, and he has kind of become our little office mascot. We usually try to dress him up for the holidays (Pilgrim hat or turkey feathers for the holidays, etc) but we didn't have anything to dress him up in for Christmas. Oh well, he'll just have to pretend he's going to Florida with my office-partner. :-)

Daddy's Boy Looking Dapper ~ Camera Critters #191

For those of you who haven't been visiting my blog for long...

First, thank you for visiting! :-D

Now, let me tell you about this blog's namesakes. We have three Border Collies. Yes, I often ask Hubs why in the world we would not only choose a breed of dog which often makes us feel inferior in intelligence, but we chose THREE of that breed. I guess we enjoy having 'kids' who challenge our intelligence. Besides, Border Collies are like Lay's potato chips... ya can't have just one. ;-)

Today's Camera-Critters star is Tag. Tag is our male Border Collie, and he's Daddy's dog through and through. In fact, other than Daddy, he doesn't have any use for people. In fact, other than Daddy, most people don't have any use for Tag. He has a tendency to make you feel very unwelcome.

Yes, Taggy has his issues, but we love him anyway. In fact, he's probably the most intelligent of our dogs. Yet, most people don't get to see what an amazing animal Tag is, because his insecurity and one-person-dogness (yeah, I just made that up) prevents it.

Regardless, he's our boy, and we love him.

Tag's favorite thing in the world is working with his 'Dad', whether it be out on the farm or getting to stay in the truck while Dad works his day job. Although Tag could probably figure out a zumba playstation, he'd much rather Santa bring him some farm equipment for Christmas. Tag LOVES farm equipment!

We had such a dry summer there is hardly any pasture for the cows to eat. So, they got a bit upset about that and decided to start tearing into the hay bales that were stacked there for winter. Hubs had to move all the hay to the other side of a gate so the cows couldn't destroy them. I think the cows are asking for hay from Santa this year. ;-)

Most of you know (and are probably sick of hearing about) how much I love my pond. It's probably my favorite place to be (with our woods coming in a close second). When I'm back at the pond, it's a form of therapy for me. I can empty my mind and let my stresses and worries go, and I can just "be". Everyone needs a place where they can just "be".

I don't have any Remote Control Boats to play with (although that would be loads of fun), but I do have fishing poles. I also have a camera, and I meet many friends back at my pond, such as "Three Eyes", who is the star of this week's Camera-Critters post.

My photo for today fits in with both the Straight Out of the Camera Sunday meme (because I didn't alter it in any way, other than a crop) and the Today's Flowers meme.

Our flowers have mostly gone away for the year, but I think the ones that remain are still beautiful in their own way. This Ironweed used to be a brilliant purple (remember Ms. Vernonia Baldwinii?), and you know how much I love purple. However, I think it is still beautiful when it's wearing its fall colors, don't you?

Starting this weekend, it's Deer Hunting Season here. Well, as my dad would correct me... it's "Gun Season" (versus Bow Season, which starts earlier... and versus youth season, which was last week). Ya gotta be technical with your terms when your dad is a person some people call "Davy Crockett" as a nickname.

Lucky for me, it's Camera Season all year! :-)

Trust me, our friends and family who hunt take special note of how "my" critters are with me. So, when any hunting season comes around, I start getting peppered with questions: "Where are the deer Misty?" "Have you seen any buck, Misty?" "Misty, have you seen a big one?"

I just smile and play dumb. I'm not against hunting. In fact, I'm pro-hunting. However, the critters I photograph are "MY Critters". No, I don't own them, but they know me; they've come to expect me walking around them; in a way, they've come to trust me. They're "MY Critters", and, if I can help it, they'll only be shot with a Sony DSLR (doesn't hurt a bit).

Deer? What deer? Nope, haven't seen any.

Un-norm, experiments, gifts, and lots of ellipsis

Well, my last post (the SOOC Sunday post) was very different than anything I normally photograph. My photography subject for this Macro Monday post isn't different from what I normally photograph, but I did decide to experiment a bit with the photograph and turn it into something that is very different from my 'norm'. I guess today I just don't feel like being 'norm'. hehe

Now let's talk about something else. Picturing these photos hanging on the wall... along with the fact that the holidays are fast approaching (it's already freaking November, People!!!)... along with the fact that my house is actually looking more like a house rather than a construction zone... well, these things have made me think about gifts... more specifically house warming type gifts... and since I'm a big fan of custom and personalized things, I've been thinking about personalized housewarming gifts. By the way, do you think I'm an ellipsis -addict? Hmmm.... something to think about.

This is totally and completely different than what I normally photograph. Yet, after burning some boxes, papers, and scrap wood, this caught my attention. It caught my attention so much that I just kept staring at it. Finally, I went for the camera. No, it's not a bug... nor a flower... nor a beautiful sunset. Yet, this scene said something to me, and I knew I had to photograph it. (Yes, you may go ahead and think I'm crazy for have a pile of ashes 'say something to me', but it did)

Vertical or Horizontal Crop? You Choose

O.K., my wonderful friends. I'm here to ask for your help. I took the below photograph while on a walk with Hubs, Step-Daughter, Son-In-Law, and GrandDoggy.

I really like the photograph, but can't decide between two crops. Each time I think I've decided, I go back and look again and change my mind. So... this is where you come in.

If you could just leave me a comment telling me "first" (vertical crop), "second" (horizontal crop), or "neither" (Why the heck do you like this photo, Misty?), I would sincerely appreciate it!

Feelin' Froggy

The visit with my step-daughter and her husband was wonderful. It was a bit bittersweet, however, because they got here on Wednesday and left on Saturday. They are so much fun to be around, and we shared many laughs and jokes.

I took the photo above when the five of us (Hubs, Step-daughter, Son-in-law, their Pug, and myself) went on a walk through the pastures and the woods. Both son-in-law and I were stopping often to take photos and then playing catch-up with the rest of the group.

We had great weather while they were here, and I miss them already... especially the little piglet... errr I mean Pug who woke me up each morning by jumping on me and smothering me with kisses. Back to work and normal life tomorrow. *sigh*

Hanging On

I've been so busy all weekend that I completely spaced Today's Flowers. I had my photo all ready to go too, but then forgot to do the post. That's O.K. though, because the photo will work for Macro Monday too.

What has kept me so busy, you ask? Well, cleaning. Cleaning the bathroom - sink, toilet, shower, washer, dryer. Cleaning the kitchen - fridge, freezer, stove, oven, microwave. Cleaning the bedroom - closet, dressers, etc. Laundry. Dishes. You see... my step-daughter and her husband are coming to visit!!! WOOT! They are our first "visiting company" we've had since we moved here four and a half years ago!

Is the house ready, you ask? Well... not really, but we're working really hard to get it ready enough for company, as it's still in a major state of construction. Hubs is trying to get the hardwood flooring in the new living room so we can move some furniture in there. Otherwise, Hubs and I will be sleeping in the pop-up camper, and that will be VERY chilly at the end of October! (please cross fingers and anything else and send us well wishes)

Regardless of if everything gets done, it will be a great time. I can't wait to see her! Oh and thanks for asking!

Bluebirds and a Butter Butt ~ Camera-Critters #185

On one of my recent trips back to the pond, a Bluebird went flying past my head and landed in one of our apple trees and proceeded to stare at me. I think the Bluebirds are SO beautiful, but they are very skittish birds, and I've yet to get a good photograph of one, because they take off as soon as I lift my camera. It's like they're playing a game with me.

I did get the below photo, which I like, because it has two Bluebirds in it. However, it's still not a good photograph. So, I stood there contemplating how I was going to get these birds to trust me.

This beautiful Yellow Rumped Warbler
decided to land in the tree right next to me
and pose for a portrait.
Not only did it pose,
It provided me with the perfect photo
to capture why it is named the "Yellow Rumped" Warbler.

I doubt these birds were looking for the best appetite suppressants, because I haven't got my bird feeders moved and filled yet. Maybe they were trying to give me a hint to get my act together and supply them with some yummies!

Bonjour Butterflies

Isn't it just beautiful??? Believe it or not, we still have quite a few butterflies, and even some dragonflies, flying around. We've had a couple weeks' worth of absolutely beautiful weather, which has made them stick around for a bit longer. The temperatures have started dropping this weekend though, so I'm sure my precious bugs will be bidding me farewell until next year.

With the changes in seasons comes my To-Do List. That may not make sense, but here's how it works. As long as it's nice outside, I want to BE outside. So, I tell myself that there will be plenty of time for computer and indoor work once the sn*w is flying (sorry, I didn't want to curse on my blog). Therefore, I now have a To-Do List which is several pages long. *sigh* Looks like I won't get bored this wint*r (such foul language in one post).

I probably won't be visiting a cigar auction online, but I do have plans on an entirely new website and blog (yeah, that's gonna be quite a chore), lots of photography related work, some crafts, and, oh yeah, we have a house to finish too. I think I'm going to need more hours in the days!

Speaking of Holidays

My wildflowers are fading and being replaced by leaves on the ground. I can't believe that Halloween is this month, not to mention Christmas is just two months away!

Yep, it's time to start bringing out the cold weather clothes and start thinking about christmas ideas for boyfriends and for whomever else you purchase gifts. To the horror of my office partner, who is Christmas-crazy, Hubs and I don't exchange gifts. With our house being in a constant state of remodel/construction, we put our money towards that rather than gifts. I must admit though, it is fun picking out that perfect gift for someone and then seeing their reaction when they open it.

So, are you one of those people who starts planning for the holidays early? Do you have a very special gift planned for someone? What's on YOUR Christmas list this year?

Bat Bully ~ Camera-Critters #184

Each year, some Little Brown Bats hang out on the helipad at my work. They don't cause any problems, they just hang out (literally). Each year, I go out and take a picture of them, which I had already done this year.

However, one day last week, my secretary (yes, her again) informed me that another co-worker said that one of the bats was down on the ground of the helipad, rather than hanging on the wall. I was a bit wary, considering bats are nocturnal creatures and shouldn't be moving around during the day. Of course, I went out with my camera any way.

I was taking photos when I started to see the bat start to stretch its wings. I snapped this photo, just before the bat flew in my direction, flew in circles around the helipad, and then finally settled on a wall. Now, we keep an eye on that bat. The others just stay in one corner and don't move around. We're a little concerned about the one I photographed.

Whenever I see the wildflowers growing among the barbed wire, it always gets my attention. The contrast of the beauty of the flower versus the harshness of the barbs... well, it just tells a story or makes a statement. That's my opinion anyway.

I decided to get a little creative this morning. Well, actually it wasn't a conscious decision. I was cropping and resizing the original photo, when this little voice in my head started saying "Pssst... sepia. Hey, I bet this might look good in sepia. Try sepia. I'm tellin' ya... S.E.P.I.A.!" Geesh - So I tried it out in sepia just to get that voice to shut up already; it was givin' me a headache! What? You don't have voices telling you what to try on your art? Then, ummmm... please disregard the majority of this paragraph. Never happened. Honest!

Overcoming a Fear

I have a fear of bees/stinging insects.
I've been doing my best to overcome this fear.
So, when I first saw this critter,
my initial reaction was,
"S*&t a wasp!",
and I started to turn and go in the other direction.
But, I stopped myself,
took a deep breath,
and photographed it.
Not once, not twice, but FOUR times.

This year has certainly been a year full of tree frogs at our house. We had six tree frogs in our house... five in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. Yeah... tree frogs. Weird, huh? We've also, of course, found them outside (probably planning and waiting for their chance to get in my kitchen hehe).

I've really been slacking on updating my blog during the past few weeks. I keep telling myself that I'm going to work on revamping my blog on the weekends, but then the weekend comes, the weather is great, and I decide to spend my time enjoying the outdoors while we still have some nice days. *sigh* I'm such a slacker. ;-)

Another "lifer" for me!
I had never seen nor photographed a male Meadowhawk dragonfly.
I had, however, photographed a female Variegated Meadowhawk.

Well, last weekend, while at the pond (shocking, I know),
I saw a red dragonfly, and I immediately knew what it was.
We played a game of Tease...
it's kinda like "Tag", but the dragonfly is always it,
and lets you get just close enough to lift your camera
and then it flies away.

We played Tease for quite a while.
Then, finally, it let me have my wish...

Stay PUT! ~ Camera-Critters #179

My very special friend (and country blogger) Susan claims that I am good at 'sneaking up on wildlife'. Well, I may be good at sneaking up on the critters, but I have also had experiences where they have come to or made themselves known to me.

The above photo is an example of this. I was back at the pond (surprise, surprise), and I decided to photograph a frog, who had been hanging out with me the whole time I had been fishing. While I was standing to photograph the frog, I heard this 'huffing' noise, which I've come to know very well, because I've heard it on previous occasions. So, I thought, "I know what that is." and I kept the camera to my eye as I slowly turned to photograph the maker of the noise.

The Whitetail doe continued to stare at me and 'huff'. I knew that there was a young deer nearby, and 'mama' was giving a warning. I later told my dad that I wish the 'huff' would have meant she was calling her young'un to her, but he clarified that she was, in fact, telling it to "Stay PUT!" Bummer.

P.S. When Hubs saw this photo, he commented that it looked like she was pointing, like a bird dog would do... tail straight, leg up. I agree, and I think that 'pointing' me out is exactly what she was doing!

Well, I love flowers, especially wildflowers... and I love purple (really love purple)... so it's no wonder I LOVE these purple wildflowers. :-) Ironweed is the common name for Vernonia Baldwinii. Kinda sounds like a lady's name, huh? Ms. Baldwinii, but you may call me Vernonia. hehe... sorry, I'll stop now. Hey, lighten up... we're looking at flowers. Besides... we're looking at PURPLE flowers! It just doesn't get any better.

Dandelion Dreams

Apparently I have a thing for taking photographs of dandelions, which have gone to seed. My photo files are full of such photos... close-up, abstract macros... photos of a seed or two getting ready to blow away... photos of the full dandelion... Yep, apparently I am drawn to photograph them.

Lately, I've been in an introspective type mood and have even signed up for a couple classes to spark my creativity, discover my niche or style, and try to expand on my talents and my spirit. In fact, I've got the box cutters ready to open the shipment the mailman should be delivering soon. I ordered some printer paper, this book, this book, and a journal for one of the classes. The journal has a dragonfly on it (go figure, huh?) and says, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us." Pretty appropriate for what I want to gain from these courses. I'll let ya know how it goes.

So, I was sitting in my office one morning, and one of my co-workers approaches my doorway, sees I'm on the phone, and, obviously disappointed, turns and walks away. Since I was already in the process of ending the phone call, I hung up, and went to see what she needed.

I guess I should no longer be surprised when my co-workers seek me out to tell me there's a critter waiting for me to photograph it...

It's a Flower, It's a Weed, It's a Pinkweed Flower

This is one of my favorite wildflowers. O.K. fine, maybe I do say that with every wildflower photo I post... I just... I was just trying to see if you were paying attention... yeah, that's what I was doing.

Anyway, this is called Pinkweed or, if you like to throw around big, complicated, technical names, then it's Polygonum pensylvanicum. Yeah, say that three times fast. I'll stick with Pinkweed.

These flowers always intrigue me, because they are rather intricate with their petals of random pink and white. None of the flowers are the same. It reminds me of bar codes on packages and how they seem so random, yet they make perfect sense to a cordless barcode scanner. I'm sure each of these flowers makes perfect sense to nature. :-) Me, I just enjoy the splashes of color they provide in the tall grasses. Oh, and they make great macro photography subjects too. Have I ever mentioned I like macro photography?

Ironic Critter Meeting ~ Camera-Critters #177

Lemme tell ya another story, which is really ironic.

Last Friday... not to be confused with this past Friday...

The Friday before this past Friday, which would make it last Friday... anyway...

It was a Friday morning, and my secretary and I were talking about the Polyphemus Moth. I said that seeing and photographing a giant moth like that was one of the things on my life list. I said another critter on my life list was the Hummingbird Moth. She asked, "A What? I've never heard of such a thing." So, I Googled (since I capitalize 'Googled', does that make it a 'Proper Verb'? uhhh anyway...) and showed her photos, and she thought it was really cool.

At lunchtime, my secretary showed up at my desk and informed me that her sister (who also works at the University) said there was a "big butterfly with blue on it" flying around the flowers in the flower garden. So, she insisted I grab the camera and go outside to take some photos - yeah, she's tough and demanding like that.

As I was photographing the "big butterfly with blue on it", which you'll have to stay tuned to see photos of (yes, I'm mean like that), I saw something out of the corner of my eye.

"Holy cow 'T'! It's a Hummingbird Moth!!!" (I may or may not have actually said cow)

"WHAT??? Are you kidding me?" T asked.

"Nope, I am NOT kidding you... LOOK!"

"Oh my gosh! It IS!"

"How ironic is that?!?!"

"I swear the critters just seek you out to photograph them, Misty!"

Man has it been a long week! Seriously! I thought Wednesday was Friday. When I realized it wasn't, I could hardly comprehend that I had two more work days to go. Finally, tomorrow is Friday! WoooHooo Not only will it finally be Friday, we're supposed to have some pretty nice weather and temperatures this weekend too. So, I'm taking the muskrat's advice and going to spend as much time as I can back at the pond. I'm sure others will be taking advantage of the weather and spending time outside camping, packing ATV Accessories and riding, and having picnics. Yep, I'm looking forward to it... tomorrow... is... finally... Friday! PLEASE don't tell me it's not!

Just My View

Usually, when I go back to my pond (a.k.a. my favorite and peaceful place), I'm back there to go fishing or photograph my beloved dragonflies and any other bugs (or wildlife), which may decide to show up and pose for my camera. Sometimes, though, when I take a look around, my breath is taken away by the true beauty that surrounds me. This photograph represents one of those times. When I experience that breathtaking acknowledgement of the beautiful place I have been honored to experience, I'm overcome with the desire to capture it in a photograph to share with others... and then I... well... I share it... with all of you. Makes sense, eh? No, this isn't one of those point of purchase displays, but it is the view that 'little ol me' happened to find extraordinary one day and decided to photograph it to share with you.

I guess after viewing these photos, a person could accuse me of being a butterfly voyeur. But, hey, with the lack of butterflies I've seen this year, I'm glad these two Pearl Crescents are doing what comes naturally. Get it? heh heh "nature" naturally... eh, never mind. Anywho... now that y'all are rolling your eyes at me, in addition to thinking I'm a peeping tom... err peeping Misty, it's time to change the subject to reconditioned laptops or website design or chocolate. Yeah, chocolate is always a good topic. Chocolate covered pretzels are my fave... what's yours?
(I did a very smooth job at changing the subject, eh?)

Flowery Bokeh

I've taken several photos while at work lately. It's nice to be able to take a few minutes away from the desk to do what I really love. Yes, I'm sorry to break it to you, but I don't refer to financial aid and love in the same sentence.

I took this photo after photographing a critter that my secretary called me outside to photograph. No, I can't tell you about the critter... you'll have to keep checking back to see it. Yes, I'm mean like that.

Anyway, after photographing the critter, and then photographing another unexpected critter who showed up but didn't pay a sitting fee... I quickly checked my michael kors watch and noted that I had enough time to snap a few photos of the flowers. Not really... I don't even have a watch... but I DID take some photos of the flowers. :-)

Butterfly Bush Take 2

May 13, 2009, on my way home from work, I was in a tornado. After Hubs picked me up (cuz my vehicle wasn't drivable), he told me that his Mom had left me an early birthday gift at the house. I thought that was weird, because my birthday isn't until the end of June. It was a Butterfly Bush.

Unfortunately, that Butterfly Bush didn't survive the winter.

Fast Forward - May 13, 2011, my in-laws pull in our drive, knock on the door, and present us with some plants they want to put in the garden, and a replacement Butterfly Bush for me as an early birthday gift. I asked my mother-in-law if she realized it was the exact anniversary of when she gave me the first one, and she said it never even occurred to her.

Luckily, I've done some research since I lost my first beloved Butterfly Bush. So, hopefully, I can help it survive this winter.

It hasn't had a chance to really thrive this summer though, because July was excessively hot, and now we are extremely dry too! I've been watering it regularly (using a pitcher rather than Delafield Corporation hose), but, it's really struggling.

At least there was a little bit of time while it was blooming beautifully, and the butterflies enjoyed it as intended. There's always next year. :-)

Bug at Work ~ Camera-Critters #176

Wednesday, I was at work and walked through one of the walkways between offices and immediately noticed a critter on the window. Not just any critter, a critter on my Life List! I immediately ran to my office, passing my secretary and saying, "We interrupt this work day, because Misty has to take a photograph."

When I got the camera and went outside, I realized that I had been followed by several of my co-workers who were interested in what Misty had found to photograph "this time". LOL I think they expected to see some critter that "only Misty" would find cool or beautiful, but everyone who saw it agreed that it was pretty awesome!

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago, I stood in my grandparents' living room (in the house that built me), and I said those two important words, which started a life journey as "us", rather than just "me".

Just short of six years later, we moved everything from furniture to tractors to a barn cat and kittens (no golf trophies though) 750 miles away from everything we had previously called "our life".

Now, we both find ourselves constantly working in hopes to eventually reach that point when we can take time to enjoy ourselves and each other. Sometimes, our time together is seriously lacking, but that doesn't change how strong my love is and how it grows each day.

And, it will continue to grow for the next ten years, and the next ten after that. I love my husband for everything he is and everything he works to become.

Happy 10th anniversary, Hubs. I love you.

O.K. Y'all know that I like bugs... well, excluding ticks, mosquitoes, chiggers, and black fly gnats. I like the COOL bugs. I tend to see a beauty in them that most others don't see. I find them fascinating, intriguing, and, yes, sometimes beautiful.

With the star of this week's Camera-Critters, well, I find these critters comical, full of personality, and fascinating all at the same time. Maybe after viewing all my bug posts, I might inspire just one person to, instead of running away from a bug, stop and actually look at it and watch it. They're really not something to fear... well, most of them anyway.

Pretty cool, huh? O.K. fine... YES, I CAN see you rolling your eyes and shaking your head at me.

Herb of Grace

Verbena Hostata, commonly known as Blue Vervain, is one of my favorite wildflowers in Missouri. I love the blue color, which sometimes has a purple tint to it. The butterflies also like it, so that's a big winner for me!

Many of the wildflowers that grow around my pond have herbal qualities. According to altnature.com, the Blue Vervain is also called Herb of Grace. It is edible and medicinal, and has many uses in Native American culture as food and medicine.

One of the things on my life list is to have an herb garden and learn how to use those herbs. So, I really enjoy learning about the herbs Mother Nature has already provided me with without my even knowing!

So, I think rather than playing newgy table tennis, I'll head back to the pond for my two favorite activities... photography and fishing, of course! I'll keep my eye out for more wildflowers. :-)

Secret Residents ~ Camera-Critters #174

Ya know how sometimes you are just going about things, minding your own business, yet you can't shake the feeling that you are being watched?

Well, that exact thing happened to me the other day.

I was feeding Tag and Maggie May in their pens, which are in the barn, and I continued to get that feeling that I was being watched.

I'd stop every now and then and look around, but I didn't see anyone. So, I'd continue with what I was doing.

When I finished feeding and watering the dogs and was getting ready to exit the barn, that "being watched" feeling became quite overwhelming. Then...

Something flew past me and almost hit me in the head!

What the heck???

Then...

I looked up...

Apparently, my dogs aren't the only critters taking up residence in the barn. I thought about asking for their rfid credit card to charge them rent, but that one on the left kept giving me this pitiful "I NEED foooooood" look. So, they can stay free of charge... but NO wild, late night parties!!!

One morning this past week, when I got to work, my secretary excitedly told me she wanted to show me something. Then she came into my office carrying a vase containing two absolutely gorgeous flowers, and she exclaimed, "LOOK! I actually grew something!" I laughed and told her they were beautiful and that I would photograph them.

It wasn't an ideal situation for photographing flowers. I prefer to photograph them in natural light, versus office lighting and an office setting. So, we made do with the circumstances the best we could, and used a black notebook for a background to make the beautiful colors of the flowers stand out. Not the perfect setting, but I think they came out nice.

Standing on Toes & Learning to Fly ~ Camera-Critters #173

In my "Barn Before" post, I told you about some straight line winds we had blow in last weekend. We didn't get any rain or storms... just some wicked winds.

After the winds subsided a bit, I went outside to look around. That's when the star of this week's Camera-Critters came hopping up to me. It hopped right up to me and then hopped up on my toes. It stood there on my toes looking up at me.

Those were some pretty strong winds, huh?

After the baby Robin decided to step down off my toes, I went in the house to grab the camera. When I came back out and started photographing the youngster, its mom and dad were diving at me and throwing a fit. "Hey," I said, "He came and stood on MY toes!"

I photographed my new little friend and took the camera back into the house. I continued to go back outside to check on him. Hey, when a critter comes up and stands on your toes, you can't help but bond with it, ya know?!?!

He continued to work on his flying. At first, it was just short little hops while flapping his wings. After a while, he was able to go a little further. Finally, after quite awhile, he was able to fly up on a low limb, and Mom and Dad about knocked him back to the ground they were in such a fury to get to him.

I can imagine how they felt. This is probably what it looked like when the wind whipped their little darling out of the nest...

Rest assured. All is good now. Sometimes it takes difficult circumstances to cause you to learn how to fly and rise above. :-)

So... I told you that I would post before and after photos of the barn today. Well, here is a before photo of the barn. You'll have to wait a bit for the after photo, as I am waiting for it to cool down a bit. I'm also hoping for an interesting sky behind the barn, like I was provided with for this photo. This photo was taken after we had some straight-line winds, and I happened to go outside and find the critter who will be the star of this week's Camera-Critters post.

Brace Yourself For Injury

This past December, Hubs had a birthday. We also had cows in one pasture separated from their calves in another pasture, and we desperately needed to get them reunited. Hubs woke up on his birthday and had a fever and ended up staying home from work.

I went to work and was having a slow day, so during my lunch hour, I decided to check Facebook. That's when I saw a comment Hubs had left to my cousin... "It's been quite the birthday. I'm sure when Misty finds out what I did, you'll hear all about it."

Ohhhh really? This prompted me to pick up the phone.

Hello.

What'd you do?

Huh?

What'd you do?

What do you mean?

HUBS!!! What did you do?

Ummmm, I'll tell you when you get home.

NO! You'll tell me now!

I'll spare you all the back-and-forth argument. I eventually found out that Hubs had tried getting the cows to move down to the pasture where the calves were, and he ended up rolling the 3-wheeler. He informed me that he hurt his shoulder.

When I got home, I had to help him get his coat off, because he couldn't get it off by himself. I'd bet my whole paycheck that he broke his collar bone, but Hubs is stubborn as all get out and refused to go to the hospital or doctor.

At the time, I didn't know about a donjoy shoulder brace, but boy do I wish I would have, because I think it would have really assisted in his recovery. He tried to keep his arm and shoulder immobilized, but that's honestly harder to do than you think.

Hubs also has terrible back trouble, and I've been looking at different back braces for him too. *sigh* The man is just falling apart. hehe Seriously though... he works very hard and does a LOT of physical labor. I just don't want him to be in pain.

Still HOT On Many Levels

It's still HOT with a capital H and O and T. HOT! Seriously. My dogs who generally want nothing to do with being in the basement, because that's away from Hubs and me... well, lately, they gladly go running for the basement, because it's cooler down there. Hubs and I spend any time in-house in the bedroom, cuz that's where the air conditioner is.

At work, Hubs, co-worker, and boss have been putting on a metal roof on a barn. Yeah - sounds like fun in this heat, huh? They've been starting at 6:30 a.m. and ending around noon. Guess what. It's OUR barn they've been putting the roof on. I'll try to take a photo for you tomorrow. Luckily they are almost all done. Just some minor details left, and no one got seriously sick or injured.

My work, has been stressful. It's been heating up in it's own sort of way, but not temperature, if ya know what I mean. I think I just need to provide document scanning services as part of my home-based services and focus more efforts at working from home... just sayin.

Anyway - before and after barn pics for tomorrow. I hope.

It's All About What You Focus On

We've been suffering through this "heat dome" for over a week now. My suffering has been more psychological than physical, as it's just too dang hot to be outside, so I'm usually holed up in my bedroom (that's the only air conditioned area). Or, I'm at work, in an air conditioned office. Hubs has been really suffering the brunt of the heat though, as he's been busy making hay... riding around in a tractor cab with NO air. Yeah, I hate to even think about it, let alone know that he's out there doing it. I wish he didn't have to do it, or at least could wait until it's cooler. But, when you're a farmer, you get the work done when you can. Right now, he's at work... putting a metal roof on a barn. They started early to avoid the heat (so no one will get sick or injured and need http://www.wholesaleinsurance.net/), but Hub's won't be avoiding the heat, cuz when they're done working, he'll be back in the airless tractor cab. *sigh*

Since it's been too uncomfortable to be outside, I haven't taken many photos lately. That normally leads to a bit of depression. So, I have been focusing on some of the photography websites I'm a part of and trying to figure out which direction I should go. I've been struggling with some doubts about some things lately, and I'm trying to snap myself out of that. That's why I chose this photo... it's all about focus. Changing focus. Getting focused... and then going for it. Hubs is my example... he's focused on what needs to be done, regardless of the difficulties associated. Roni is my example as she inspires me with her talent and proves that you really can reach for the dream. Bear is my example with his talent, his patience, his friendship and the things he teaches me. All of you - my online friends - help me focus by not giving up on me.

Milkweed & Monarchs

For my Macro Flowers Saturday post, I shared some photos of "Tall Green Milkweed" with you. So, as a follow up, I thought I'd share a photo of the flower of the pink milkweed plant, which is what we're used to calling "milkweed" around here.

It's a very unique, interesting and pretty flower. I always feel drawn to photograph it, because it always catches my eye. It's very intricate and detailed.

When I was doing a Google search on Milkweed, I was surprised to find a link to Amazon.com which had several different varieties of Milkweed I had never heard of. They also stated (about the Monarch butterfly) "Monarch larvae feed exclusively on Milkweeds. That means if there is no Milkweed, there would be no Monarchs" Makes me want to run out and plant LOTS of Milkweed! Some people buy phenphedrine, Misty buys Milkweed seed. hehehehe

Tall Green Milkweed

The Asclepias hirtella (Pennell) Woodson is also called "Tall Green Milkweed", and I think it is one of the most interesting flowers I've ever seen. It grows back behind our pond in the raspberry and blackberry rows.

When we first moved here, Hubs once asked me, "Have you seen that cool looking ball-like flower back by the pond?" Of course, my reply was, "Yep, and I've already photographed it." hehe

Spangled Skimmer ~ Camera-Critters #172

Y'all know how I am obsessed with dragonflies, so you won't be surprised that I'm posting another photo of one of my beloved dragons. Besides... I told you earlier this week that one of the dragonflies I photographed last weekend was a "lifer" for me (meaning it was the first time I had ever photographed this species). So, it's only fitting that I share the "lifer" photograph with you... right? The dragonfly in the above photo is a Spangled Skimmer dragonfly, and, let me tell ya, it's a beauty! Those white spots on the wings just flash and shimmer when it flies around, causing it to really catch your eye.

I had been watching this species of dragonfly fly around my pond, but they wouldn't sit still long enough for a photograph. I was absolutely thrilled when one finally sat still... even if it did require me to do some fancy leaning and standing on my tip-toes to get the photo. It was worth it! Nope, this photo won't be going in the recycle bin composter. It is one of my current faves now.

Camera Feels Effects of Heat Dome

I used to participate in Looking at the Sky on Friday, which isn't active right now. So, I decided to go ahead and post a sky photo anyway. Cuz I was in the mood to post a sky photo. So I am... posting a sky photo, that is.

Besides, this photo reminds me of what it's like to be outside and enjoy it. Best weightloss pills aren't needed around here right now, because you walk outside and the weight just melts and sweats right off of ya. I'm not kidding! It's pretty unbearable.

The other day, my new camera was whispering to me, and it wasn't saying very nice things! It whispered "Hey you! What'd you get me for if you're just gonna leave me in this bag all the time? You coulda just left me in the store with my REAL friends!" Seriously! My camera is even feeling the effects of this "heat dome". Poor neglected camera.

Ummmm... let's keep the fact that my camera whispers to me between us, O.K.? Thanks.

Dragon Hunting

If you know a little bit about me, you know that I'm crazy about my dragonflies. This year, the bug population has been quite lacking, except for the unwanted bugs. Yeah, there's no shortage of ticks, black fly gnats, and biting flies. However, I've seen very few butterflies. I've seen some dragonflies, but not the normal species I usually see. Also, the dragonflies are constantly moving... more than usual. This morning, however, I finally had a good "dragon hunt".

I braved the heat (we're under an excessive heat warning for the entire week), and went back to the pond. It paid off for me, because I was able to photograph five species of dragonflies! One of those species was a "lister", meaning I had never photographed that species yet. But, you'll have to wait to see that one (and boy is he pretty). The dragon in this photograph is an Eastern Pondhawk. The Eastern Pondhawk is a common dragonfly around here. Yet, it's one of the species I hadn't seen yet this year. So, apparently...

There Baaaaack.

Fish For Dinner? ~ Camera-Critters #171

We're under an excessive heat watch for the next week. I think I should follow this Great Blue Heron's lead and just stand in the water all day. Although, after several days of excessive heat, I imagine the water will end up pretty warm and won't be too refreshing. Besides, I prefer my fish cooked unlike what this Heron is planning on for dinner.

I saw this Great Blue Heron standing in my neighbors' pond when I was on the way back from taking some baler twine to Hubs. I had to stop for a quick photo, although I didn't think it would come out very good, considering I was quite a distance from it. However, the new camera (Sony a580) continues to impress me. While it's not the best photo, the camera sure did allow me to get an "O.K." photo out of something that I wouldn't have otherwise.

A New Perspective ~ A New View

I was SO excited to photograph this Ebony Jewelwing, because not only had I never photographed an Ebony Jewelwing before, I had never photographed ANY species of Jewelwing. So, I chased the bug through the tall grass and wildflowers, dismissing the thought of ticks, which kept coming into mind. I HAD to get a photograph! Had.To.

Well, I got a couple photographs (after several minutes of chasing), and when I returned back home, I excitedly put the photographs on my computer to view... only to realize that I didn't get the wings in focus. My heart sank. I had never seen a Jewelwing around here before, and I have doubts if I will again. So, I just chalked it up to a missed opportunity and was thankful that I did, in fact, at least photograph a new-to-me species.

However... when scrolling through photos on my computer today, this photograph struck me in a whole new way. I kept going back to look at it. I was viewing it in a different way than how I usually view my "bug photos". Rather than looking at it as a "photo of a bug" which needs to have all details in focus, I saw the overall photo... the soft and whispy background... the yellows and greens... the yellow flower to the right of the image and the fact that it looks like the Jewelwing is appreciating that flower's beauty. Then, magically, a photo which I had at first been very disappointed in, became a whole new photo to me when I looked at it in a different perspective. So... I now share it with you to see what you think.
